Matteo’s stunning performance took place at the annual Celebrity Fight Night charity concert, which has been hosted in Italy by Andrea and his wife Veronica Berti since 2014. In 2017, they were joined by Sharon Stone, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Elton John and country music legend Reba McEntyre, all of whom performed, while others like Sophia Loren, Bo Derek and Antonio Banderas cheered them on. The glamorous gala fundraiser lasted from September 5-10 across various dinners, shows and receptions, building to the final concert where Matteo took to the stage in one of the grandest – and most daunting – venues in the world.
Matteo was still only 19 and a year away from gaining global recognition when he duetted with his father on Fall On Me, the theme song to the Disney movie The Nutcracker and the Four realms. But he had already discussed his dream with his parents.
Andrea said: “Some time ago Matteo revealed that he would like to follow in my footsteps, so to speak. For a parent it is… it’s difficult to understand and to support because I know all the difficulties of the job very well. And to those he will need to add the difficulties of being the son of an artist.”
Matteo has already made his debut the previous year, aged just 18 at the 2016 Celebrity Fight Night, when his father and the musical director, David Foster, called him up to sing on stage out of the blue.
His step-mother Veronica recalled how she did not think he would do it and spoke of his “extreme shyness.”
She later said: “I heard our lifelong friend David Foster calling our son Matteo on stage. I did not even turn around and I just said: ‘there’s no way my son will get on stage, no way.’
“Instead I turned around and heard his voice. So this year we have told him, ‘Matteo, would you like to be there?’ And since it is also a bit typical of young people that they do not realise what you are offering them, he just said, ‘Yeah, ok.’
Matteo said: “It’s really exciting, not just for the celebrities that will be there on the night, all those great artists, but also for the privilege to sing in that beautiful setting that is the Colosseum. It will be a great honour to be there.”
Andrea warned that such a performance would be baptism of fire for his son.
He said: “The task, from an artistic point of view, was within his reach, but one should always consider all the problems related to being nervous – the calm that you must always have. It is a test, a very important test.”
So, did young Matteo pass the test?

Matteo took to the stage, accompanied by his father on piano and dazzled the crowd with his powerful operatic voice.
Afterward, he admitted: “At the beginning, I was a bit emotional, I was a bit nervous. But then, when I get on stage, little by little I relax, and it doesn’t take too long.”
Veronica, who is an experienced artist manager well as part of the family, said: “Matteo was nervous, but I must say there are moments when he shows a great maturity, if by maturity we mean – I won’t say detachment – but the calm there is in knowing that can be done, must be done. That is it.”
Matteo added with a beaming smile: “The most emotional moment of the evening was at the end… when the audience started to cheer. These are little satisfactions.”
Watching, probably just as nervously from the audience was his big brother Amos – the only one of the family not often seen performing music in public.

Amos said: “I cheered from the North stand of the Colosseum… a true fan. For me that was a great emotion, it really was.
“Although I hope to be able to say one day, ‘I’ve got used to it by now!”
Amos is a talented pianist in his own right, who has accompanied his father on stage and played on Andrea’s 2018 album Si. But the 26-year-old is pursuing a career in his other love, spatial engineering.
His little sister Virginia is often seen on Youtube singing at home with her father. Last year, she hit headlines when she performed Leonard Cohen’s Halleluyah at a live-streamed Christmas concert from the Teatro Regia di Parma.
Andrea and Veronica have posted a series of images with nine-year-old Virginia recently at a concert hall in Miami, which hint they have recorded a concert that will be revealed soon.
Meanwhile, Amos has had time over teh past few years to get used to Matteo’s rising fame. The young star continues to establish himself as a singer in his own right.
As well as appearing on stage at shows all around the world after the release of Fall On Me, Matteo has been working on a solo album which is expected in the coming months.
He has been teasing fans for months with pictures of himself in the recording studio, as well as videos singing covers of songs by the likes of Justin Bieber.

Celebrity Fight Night originated in Phoenix, Arizona in 1994 as a way to harness celebrity star power to drive charitable donations to a variety of good causes.
In 2014, Andrea and his wife Veronica launched a sister event in Italy to benefit the Andrea Bocelli Foundation and the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. They also support schools and educational projects in Haiti.
