Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has confirmed the death of his eldest son Nicholas, at 43 years old.

"His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft. – ALW."

The famous composer has been sharing updates on his son's health in the lead-up to his death, confirming just earlier this week that his son, who was also a composer, had been moved to a hospice.

Andrew was immediately hit with support from fans and friends, with one user writing: "I'm so, so sorry to read this. Sending love to you and your family."

While another said: "So sorry to hear of your loss. Much love to you and your family."

A third person added: "Incredibly sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. Prayers for you and your family."

It comes days after Andrew shared a video following the support his son had received from the public as he wrote: "I think he's over the worst of this first bout of pneumonia that he's got as a result of his cancer, which is just ghastly."

He explained that his son was in a hospice and added that he and his family were by Nick's side while he continued to battle the illness.

Andrew had also thanked his fans for showing love in the challenging time, with some fans sending him a Cats T-shirt – following his success within the show.

He said: "It's incredibly moving… everything they're going through they have been so incredibly thoughtful about dearest Nick.

"I'm going to go and see Nick in a minute and I'm going to pass on all of the fantastic wishes that I've had for him all the way from everywhere all around the world."

Nick has been "critically ill" and was in hospital following an 18 month battle with gastric cancer.

Andrew's son Nicholas had built up a very successful career in theatre of his own, writing Fat Friends The Musical as well as penning numerous TV and film hits.
