BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker’s heartwarming message ahead of show exit

BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker's has paid tribute to his colleagues ahead of his last time hosting the show this morning (May 17).

Dan, who is leaving the show after six years, filmed himself walking near the BBC Studios in Salford, Manchester as he prepared himself for what would likely be an emotional final time presenting the show.

The host, 45, told how he was "armed with cakes" to give to the BBC Breakfast team who had been an "absolute pleasure to work with".

He said: "Hopefully it's going to be a fun day, lots to talk about, lots of big news stories around today, we've got some great guests on the show as well so I'm going to enjoy the last one."

Dan also revealed he only had little under three hours sleep ahead of his big day.

He laughed as he said: "For those asking if I got here safely? I did just, two hours and 46 minutes sleep. Not the best prep for the final day but hopefully going to be a fun one. See you in the there."

Dan added: "I'll leave you with the Salford sky, before panning the camera to show the deep orange hue of the morning sunrise."

Dan is leaving the show to take up a role on Channel 5's revamped 5 News, as a replacement for Sian Williams, after she announced she was stepping down last month.

Dan said in a video statement about his new TV appointment: "I can’t wait to get stuck into the daily news show, but I am also excited about making some great new TV for Channel 5. I love their ideas and creativity and it’s rare to get an opportunity like this where paths and ambitions meet. The chance to do something different was too good to turn down."

Dan is set to rake in a whopping £1.5million for the move to Channel 5, in comparison to his £300,000 salary at the BBC, according to The Sun.

But Dan has stressed that his move to Channel 5 was not "motivated by money".

He said on the BBC One show: "I've never ever been motivated by money in any job I’ve ever taken and even though I love BBC Breakfast and everyone who works on the show, this is a fantastic opportunity to work with a brilliant team on Channel 5 and also go and make some other programmes outside of news."
