It’s been 20 years since Brian May opened Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee by performing the national anthem on the roof of Buckingham Palace on his electric guitar. The iconic moment is something his fans remember warmly to this day and the rock legend says the experience changed him.
Speaking previously with Express.co.uk, Brian said: “The roof was a very special thing, that’s something you do once in your life. It was riveting and it was terrifying for me and it changed me as a person. After I’d done that I felt I’d never be afraid of anything again. That was truly walking on the edge of a precipice. Forever I will be proud of that moment because that was really breaking barriers, breaking frontiers. And so much could have gone wrong. I’m so grateful that it didn’t!”

Brian has previously shared the clip on his Instagram and admitted: “I was on top of Buckingham Palace. The loneliest place in the world, playing God Save The Queen and terrified out of my wits. But it’s one of those times where you face the fear and you’re never quite the same again after it.”
And it was 20 years on this summer when the 75-year-old returned to open the Platinum Jubilee concert, this time appearing on the Victoria monument, having convinced The Queen to tap along to We Will Rock You with Paddington Bear.
Brian admitted earlier this year: “I asked for that. I said, ‘Would The Queen tap it’ and they wouldn’t give us an answer. And we didn’t know until the day before. They said, ‘Oh we might get somebody Royal to do it for you.’” Of course, it was Her Majesty herself.
