Brian May’s favourite Queen song to play live ‘Gives me good feelings’

Queen’s Brian May knighted for services to music and charity

Queen and Adam Lambert will be gearing up for their US tour later this year but in the meantime, Sir Brian May and Roger Taylor are promoting the return of their band’s musical to the West End. The rock legends appeared on The One Show this week with the production’s writer Ben Elton to talk about its limited run at the London Coliseum this summer. In fact, the comedian himself will be starring as The Rebel Leader this time around, acting in a musical for the first time in decades. During their chat with the BBC, the newly knighted guitarist was asked which Queen song he loves playing most of all.

Sir Brian said: “I still love playing them all, I have to be honest. I would have to say We Will Rock You. Especially as this is the moment when we’re relaunching the musical that is named after that song. It always gives me a good feeling.”

The 75-year-old wrote the track for Queen’s 1977 album News of the World as he wanted a song that the audience could participate in with stomping and clapping. That year the song was issued alongside We Are The Champions as a worldwide Top 10 single before the two tracks became the band’s way of ending their spectacular live shows to this day.

Sir Brian added: “Rock You and Champions are kind of the staple for the end of the show and you know it’s going to score. You know people will be happy, so it is lovely and you get the feeling you could just do it with the audience without instruments and they would get it.”

Queen musical We Will Rock You starring Ben Elton opens June 2 at London Coliseum for 12 weeks and can be booked here.
