British rock band Coldplay have announced that they will stop making music in 2025 after their long run in the industry since 1996 when they first got together.
Frontman Chris Martin, 44, appeared on BBC Radio 2 yesterday (Wednesday 22 December) to talk about another upcoming album for the award-winning group, when he let slip of the news.
He said: "Our last proper record will come out in 2025, and after that I think we will only tour.
"And maybe we'll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then."
This comes after the multi-talented band released their ninth studio album just two months ago, Music of the Spheres, which they are touring in 2022.
After numerous number one hits and awards from the Grammys to the BRITs, Coldplay have pulled together a broad catalogue.
They were initially known for their mellow indie rock sounds from their first three studio albums, until they evolved and experimented with pop from Mylo Xyloto (2011) collaborating with stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé, to A Head Full of Dreams (2015) and collaborations with K-pop group BTS on Music of the Spheres (2021).
They won Best Alternative Music Album for their first studio album, Parachutes, at the 2002 Grammys and have gone on to sell over 100 million albums worldwide, going platinum nine times in the UK and twice in the U.S. The band has also recently been nominated for a 2022 BRIT for Group of the Year and Best Rock/Alternative Act.
The public have had a mixed response at the news of the last upcoming album.
One Tweeter wrote: "I'm not sure even die hard @coldplay fans actually care about what the plans of Chris Martin are in 3 years time."
Another said: "Coldplay have announced they’ll stop releasing new mucic by 2025. So that’s about 4 more years of them headlining Glastonbury I reckon!"
One tweeted: "Coldplay are a group of nice enough guys who make inoffensive music. Their absence will also mean that many Gen X’ers and Millennials will have to figure out a key aspect of their identity all over again."
Chris Martin told NME in October that Coldplay would make 12 studio albums before they retire from music. But this is the first time he has put a date to it.
He has previously said to Absolute Radio that he would love for the band to keep touring in the future regardless, "in the way that the [Rolling] Stones do, it will be so cool if we can still be touring in our late 70s."
The BBC radio clip comes ahead of Chris Martin's next radio appearance – Christmas with Chris Martin and Jo Whiley on Thursday 23 December, BBC Radio 2 at 7pm.
