Christina Applegate gained 40 pounds and used wheelchair on set amid MS battle

    Christina Applegate has revealed she gained 40 pounds and was wheeled to set after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

    The Hollywood star, 50, confirmed she had started treatment for the autoimmune disease in August last year.

    Diagnosed while filming her Emmy-nominated series Dead To Me, the show took a five-month production break while Christina received treatment.

    The dark comedy will drop its third and final season to Netflix later this month and speaking recently, Christina opened up about the challenges of filming the show following her life-changing diagnosis.

    Describing completing filming as "the hardest thing that she has ever done", Christina also confirmed she had gained 40 pounds and now uses a cane to walk.

    She told the New York Times: "This is the first time anyone's going to see me the way I am.

    "I put on 40 pounds; I can't walk without a cane.

    "I want people to know that I am very aware of all of that."

    During the interview, Christina confirmed she had initially ignored warning signs of the disease while filming earlier seasons of Dead to Me.

    This included her losing her balance while performing a dance routine for the show.

    Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong condition which affects the brain and nervous system and can lead to vision, balance and walking problems.

    In the wake of her diagnosis and the production break, Christina revealed she was taken by wheelchair to set.

    A number of scenes were also re-shaped to accommodate her health struggles, with the star leaning on doors for balance and at stages, having her legs held by a member of production in order to stay upright.

    Of the production break, she added: "I needed to process my loss of my life, my loss of that part of me.

    "So I needed that time – although it's not like I came on the other side of it, like, 'Woohoo, I’m totally fine.

    "Acceptance? No. I'm never going to accept this. I’m pissed."

    Christina has been married to Dutch bassist Martyn LeNoble, 53, since 2013 and the couple shared one daughter Sadie, 11.

    Her multiple sclerosis diagnosis follows Christina undergoing a double mastectomy while battling breast cancer in 2008.

    In 2017 the actress had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.
