Danny Dyer admits he’s a natural ginger and dyed his hair to land movie role

EastEnders star Danny Dyer has revealed he is a natural ginger.

He dyed his hair red to land a role in the 2006 movie All In The Game, playing alongside acting hero Ray Winstone.

But when filming ended, he couldn’t get the colour out for months.

And to his horror, it made him realise what natural shade his barnet really is.

Danny, 44, said: “I’d done Football Factory and I really wanted this job.

“It was about football, Ray was a football manager and I played his son.

“But the director had an issue with me.

“He thought because of Football Factory, I was going to bring the wrong vibe to the job. Hooligans running around, that sort of stuff.

“But he said ‘Listen, the only way I can give you this job is if you dye your hair ginger. Ray was ginger when he was younger and you’re playing his son.’

“So I thought, ‘F*** it.’ You do anything for acting. So, I dyed it and it looked awful.

“I think I’ve got a slight bit of ginge about me anyway, so it brought it all out. When we went to the read-through I walked into it with a ginger nut.

“The fall out from that was I couldn’t get the ginger out. It took f***ing months and months of me trying to dye it.

“I think maybe I’m a natural ginger.”

Danny has also revealed he would love to do some comedy when he leaves the BBC soap EastEnders later this year after playing Mick Carter for nine years.

He added: “This is something I want to delve into a little bit as well.

“You’ve got to follow your dreams. Because otherwise, what have you got? All of us should follow our dreams as human beings.”

Danny was first asked to star in the BBC One soap opera in back April 2009, but turned it down as he didn’t think he could cope with the pressure.

However, the BBC announced in October 2013that Danny had been cast in the soap and would appear from Christmas 2013.

He has been part of several gripping storylines since joining the soap.

In 2017, Danny took a short break from EastEnders, at the time BBC bosses said that his hiatus was because he was experiencing 'exhaustion', but Danny later spoke out about the real reasoning behind his break.

Danny flew to South Africa during his short break from the show, and spoke about the hiatus when he sat down with Jake Wood on his Pound For Pound boxing podcast.
