Elton John turns down Royal invite to Princess Diana memorial after hip op

Sir Elton John's recovery from hip replacement surgery has meant he is unable to attend a memorial for his late friend Princess Diana.

The event, organised to celebrate the life of the people's Princess, will be held at Kensington Palace after it was postponed as a result of the Covid pandemic.

The party was scheduled for around the same time as the unveiling of the statue made to commemorate Princess Diana, mother to Prince William and Prince Harry.

The statue was approved by Prince Harry and Prince William to commemorate Princess Diana and was unveiled to mark what would have been the late Princess' 60th birthday.

Now scheduled to take place on October 19, the exclusive party will host friends and family of Diana with 100 VIP guests also invited.

Prince William invited Sir Elton, who has since had to send his apologies on to the Royals explaining that he is not physically able to attend the event.

A source told The Sun: “Elton underwent hip replacement surgery at the start of the month. It went well and he is on the mend but is taking things slow.“

The Candle In The Wind singer said: "Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increasing difficulties moving.

“I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications.

"I will be undertaking a program of intensive physiotherapy that will ensure a full recovery and a return to full mobility without pain.”

It has also been announced this week that Harry and Meghan will not venture back to the UK for the bash celebrating the life of Harry's mother.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes told the Telegraph that the pair will not make it back to the UK for the event which has also cast doubts over whether Lilibet's christening will take place in the UK.

As a result of his operation Elton was forced to postpone his final tour dates of 2021.

The superstar's remaining Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour dates have been rescheduled to January 2022.
