Elvis Presley lived with his extended family at Graceland for 20 years, hiring close relatives as security and his Memphis Mafia. One of his most trusted confidants was his cousin Billy Smith, who The King bought a trailer for on the mansion’s estate. There he and his wife Jo raised their sons Joey and Danny, childhood playmates of Lisa Marie Presley who knew the late singer exceptionally well. And just like Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic, they are not impressed with the new Netflix show Agent Elvis, taking to their social media channels to express their disdain.
Agent Elvis is created by The King’s ex-wife Priscilla Presley, who voices herself in the tongue-in-cheek cartoon. The adult animation is set between 1968-73 and imagines the singer as a secret agent going on missions that wouldn’t look out of place in an Austin Powers movie.
The critics love Agent Elvis, but many loyal fans have taken to social media to share how much they can’t stand the cartoon, which is full of swearing, crude humour and bloody violence.
Among them is Billy’s son Danny Smith, who wasn’t a fan of Matthew McConaughey not even attempting the late singer’s voice. He said on his Memphis Mafia YouTube channel how “very disappointed” he was with the show adding: “His voice is not Elvis. That didn’t work for me.”
Danny had hoped Agent Elvis would be for kids, saying: “I was disappointed… it could have been so much more of a cartoon and also some Elvis education in with the fun and even the bang up, bust up [action]…Did Elvis cuss? Sure he did, he was human. But he knew it was respectful, the time and place. Some words like that around his mother or his family, especially ladies, just would not have happened unless he was really, really angry and it slipped.”
The King’s close relative isn’t even sure if he’ll finish watching the series having viewed the first three episodes with his father Billy, who thought the cartoon made his famous cousin “look kind of stupid like he wasn’t running the show, but everybody around him was.” They’re also adamant the star himself wouldn’t have liked it.
Danny added: “I personally know that Elvis would not have appreciated it, he wouldn’t like it. Now he would have been damn proud of making Agent Elvis [if it had been] a little different…From what I know, I grew up [with] and lived with Elvis, I can almost tell you it wouldn’t have been his cup of tea.
“Thank God that I got to grow up and live that life and have thank man be part of my family…he was like a superhero. We just looked up to him, he was an idol. He was my Daddy’s idol there’s no doubt about that. Maybe we just expected more… I don’t care for it and I don’t really think that that should stay like it is… in my opinion, it could be so much better.”
