Lisa Marie Presley: Mandy Walker on late star
Elvis Presley finally proposed to Priscilla Presley on Christmas, 1966, after almost a decade of being together. And just a few months later, on May 1, 1967, the loved-up couple were married. Their intense relationship continued to blossom from there, as exactly nine months later, on February 1, 1968, Lisa Marie Presley, their only child, was born. But Elvis almost didn’t make it to the hospital with Priscilla once labour started, as he was on the hunt for his essentials.
Priscilla recalled in her memoir that Elvis struggled to get out of bed once she realised she was in labour.
Elvis was famously nocturnal for a lot of his life, so waking up in the middle of the day was a struggle for him.
While he roused himself from his abode, Priscilla did her hair and put on a full face of makeup before finding out where he had got to.
She wrote: “Elvis is moving around the house in slow motion while I’m crossing my legs.” (Via Cheat Sheet)
Things got worse once he realised how excited he was for the birth of his daughter – but there was a problem. He couldn’t find the special celebration cigars he had put aside for this very occasion.
Priscilla explained he was hunting around the rooms of Graceland for his cigars while she struggled to keep her cool.
“He finally finds his cigars,” she eventually added. “But now he’s lulling around the kitchen, getting a bite to eat.”
She laughably went on: “Elvis is acting like we’ve all the time in the world.”
Eventually, after some more time, Elvis got to the car where Priscilla was waiting and drove her to the hospital… but things went from bad to worse for the soon-to-be mother.

Priscilla wrote that Elvis drove her to the wrong hospital. Instead of getting them to the Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, Elvis arrived at Methodist Hospital.
This was the moment Priscilla lost her temper with her husband.
She yelped at him: “I’m having this baby in the car.”
There is a happy ending to the story though: Baby Lisa Marie and her mother were both happy and healthy when they eventually arrived at the correct hospital.
However, Priscilla was met with further issues with Elvis once Lisa Marie had arrived.
Once Priscilla had given birth, Elvis refused to have sex with her again.
She wrote in her memoir: “[Elvis] had mentioned to me before we were married that he had never been able to make love to a woman who had a child.”
Naturally, this had a major impact on Priscilla’s view of herself: “I [was] beginning to doubt my own sexuality as a woman.” She even added: “My physical and emotional needs were unfulfilled.”
