Elvis Presley worked alongside Mary Tyler Moore in the 1969 movie Change of Habit. The movie focussed on Dr John Carpenter (Elvis) looking for help from local women. One of these women, Michelle (Mary Tyler), was secretly a nun trying to help the community without revealing her identity. In her autobiography Mary Tyler detailed the first time she met the King of Rock n Roll.
Although both of the actors were extremely famous by ’69, Mary Tyler had become a Hollywood icon from appearing in The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961-1966. After Change of Habit the actress would go on to star in The Mary Tyler Moore show from 1970-1976.
The star wrote in her book: “[Elvis] confessed right from the start that he’d had a crush on me since The Dick Van Dyke Show.”
Despite being a platinum-selling artist, Elvis was extremely embarrassed about telling her this intimate secret.
Mary Tyler added: “He was so shy about it he was literally kicking at the dirt below him as he talked.”
At the time Elvis was 34-years-old – two years older than Mary Tyler – but the actress revealed the Memphis singer constantly acted as if she was his superior.
She wrote: “He had a tendency, even though I was younger, to call me ‘ma’am’ out of respect: ‘Yes ma’am. Be right there, ma’am.’”
By the time the film’s shooting had come to an end, Elvis and Mary Tyler were great friends.
She continued in her autobiography: “Well, you know, you fool around on the set, and you chat and you joke and you play records, and whatever. And yeah, the three of us, Elvis and Barbara [McNair] and I had a great time together.”

Mary Tyler added: “We had a couple of nights of shooting where you start – because you need the dark – we’d start shooting at 7 o’clock in the evening and wind up at five in the morning, and that’s insanity time, you know. And the only thing that kept us going was the camaraderie on the set.”
Despite how close the pair became, they apparently never slept together.
Make-up artist for the film Jim McCoy once commented “Elvis was trying to put the make on Mary but she wouldn’t go for it” at the movie’s wrap party.
In her autobiography, Mary Tyler confirmed they never spent the night together.

The actress wrote: “I was his last leading lady. The King would slyly say later on: ‘I slept with every one of my leading ladies but one.’
“I don’t want to bust anyone’s cover, but I know who the ‘one’ is.”
Although Mary Tyler couldn’t be wooed by the King, she was “surprised” by how good an actor he was.
She told Coronet Magazine: “I was an Elvis fan before I ever met him, but probably later than most girls were.”
The star continued: “I began to like the way he sang when he began to put more feeling into his songs. You know, I thought anybody who had been the centre of all that insanity for so long would have some of it rub off on him.
“Most of my preconceived notions were not borne out. For instance, I was very surprised at how awfully good he is as an actor.”
Change of Habit spent four weeks on the Variety Box Office charts.
The film peaked at number 17 on the top 20 list.
