Aside from Graceland’s upstairs, there are a few unseen rooms at Elvis Presley’s Memphis mansion that fans don’t usually get to step into. Nevertheless, Express.co.uk recently took part in a virtual live tour of the house, in which a live-streamed camera was taken inside some rarely explored spaces. Expertly guided by on-site archivist Angie Marchese, we were able to virtually step inside the mysterious laundry room.
Graceland’s laundry room is located in the basement alongside the TV room and pool rooms.
Fans on the walk-through tour often ask what’s behind an opaque window in The Jungle Room just up the stairs. Well, that’s where it is.
Before entering the cleaning space, Angie said: “Every house has a laundry room and recently somebody asked me about laundry at Graceland and who was in charge of doing laundry.
“When Elvis first moved into Graceland, of course, Gladys did all the laundry and she would hang it outside to dry.”
Angie added: “After that, most of Elvis’ clothes, especially in the sixties and seventies, went to the dry cleaners.
Opening the door, the Graceland archivist said: “It’s not very fancy, but it’s a laundry room.”
If anything, it’s mostly what you’d expect from sinks, a dryer and a water heater to air and heating units.
But also just behind the door is an electrical entertainment system that is used to this day.

On the entertainment unit, Angie said: “So if you ever hear music at Graceland being played through the speaker system, this is how we play it.
“We do use Elvis’ original speaker system – that’s wired for sound with this system.”
This is also where Christmas music CDs are played from during the festive season.
Also down in the basement is Jerry Schilling’s bedroom, which we were also lucky enough to see.

Now used as storage space for Graceland’s Christmas decorations, Jerry’s bedroom used to regularly flood.
Also used by Charlie Hodge when he lived in the mansion, there was a plank by the door that was used to step over the water when it rose.
Angie continued: “It has a full bath down here and this is where the guys stayed.
“For those of you who know Jerry Schilling, [he’s] talked about this room several times.”
The Elvis expert added: “He’s talked about the low ceilings [and] he’s talked about how it would flood because you’re down here in the basement.”
“He’s also talked about bringing girls back here, every now and then.”
While it was fun seeing these rooms, the most exciting had to be virtually stepping inside Elvis’ private upstairs bathroom in the racquetball court.
Not only did The King have a jacuzzi in there during the mid-1970s, but also a wet room with five gold-plated showerheads spread across both sides.
