Eminems net worth and why Michael Jackson owned his music as rapper turns 50

Want to make early Eminem fans feel old? Let them know he’s just turned 50.

That’s right, one of the biggest rap artists of his generation has hit the big five-oh as of October 17.

It was almost half a lifetime ago when aged just 26 he released his breakthrough second album, The Slim Shady LP, in 1999.

Singles such as My Name Is off that record and Stan off next year's album, The Marshall Mathers LP, set him up for stardom.

In a career full of controversy and intrigue, Eminem has risen to the top of the charts, "retired", comeback and added actor and producer to his list of achievements.

Dubbed the “King of Hip Hop” by Rolling Stone, Eminem — whose real name is Marshall Mathers — has managed to rake in some serious money through his impressive album sales, acting stints and blockbuster tours.

Here is a look at how much the 8 Mile star is worth as he enters his sixth decade.

What is Eminem’s net worth?

Celebrity Net Worth puts Eminem’s monetary value at a cool $230million (£203m) in 2022.

But that's just what the Lose Yourself artist has kept in the bank or has in terms of assets.

The site estimates his career total earnings are an even higher $380m (£336m).

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Eminem has sold $166m (£147m) worth of digital singles as of June 2022 and earned another $61m (£54m) in album sales.

Did Eminem retire?

There was speculation — partly fuelled by comments the rapper made publicly — that he could be about to hang up his mic after his Anger Management Tour, which was in support of 2004 album encore.

But the retirement ended up being more of a break from making music, with Eminem using the five-year gap between records to kick his prescription drug habit.

In 2005, he indicated in comments to the US station WKQI that he could be ending his recording career.

"I'm at a point in my life right now where I feel like I don't know where my career is going,” he said.

“This is the reason that we called it [his greatest hits] Curtain Call because this could be the final thing. We don't know.”

In December 2007, Eminem was hospitalised after a methadone overdose.

Doctors there told him he had ingested the equivalent of four bags of heroin and was "about two hours from dying".

He kicked the habit, with British pop star Elton John acting as a mentor during his battle, calling Eminem once a week to check on him, according to Rolling Stone.

Eminem has been sober since 2008, releasing his comeback album Relapse a year later.

Why Michael Jackson owned some of Eminem's music

The former king of pop Michael Jackson was known for his business acumen when it came to buying up music rights.

He famously owned a big chunk of The Beatles copyright after snapping them up in 1985, with his estate only selling his 50% share in 2016.

Jackson, who died in 2009, opted to buy the company that owned Eminem's songs.

The Thriller singer’s acquisition of Famous Music came three years after he was targeted by the rapper in his 2004 song Just Lose It.

During the song, Eminem included a lyric that said: "Come here, little kiddie, on my lap / Guess who's back with a brand new rap? / And I don't mean rap as in a new case of child molestation."

To make this reference even more plain, Eminem dressed up as Michael in the music video for the song, where he donned fake plastic surgery and had his hair set on fire — a reference to a stage accident the singer had years earlier.

Jackson called his depiction and mocking at the hands of the Detroit-based rapper “disrespectful” and “painful”.

But, in a bizarre twist of fortunes, Jackson would go on to make money off any sales of the very song that insulted him.

In 2007, Jackson's company Sony/ATV bought the publishing company Famous Music for $370million (£327m).

This purchase meant he then owned the rights to all of Eminem's music.

Jackson continued to own the rapper's music until his death at the age of 50.
