By the 1990s, Oasis had become one of the biggest bands in the UK. And, during their rise to fame, brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher were quick to attribute their inspiration and influence to The Beatles – but they never imagined their musical heroes would eventually say some harsh things about them.

In a documentary about Oasis, George Harrison made some comments about the band – and specifically, hit out at the band’s frontman.

The My Sweet Lord singer confessed: “The music lacks depth, and the singer Liam is a pain.”

At the time, Oasis were headlining venues such as Knebworth and Maine Road, and had spearheaded the genre of music now known as Britpop.

However, Harrison reiterated that Oasis could have been better off if things were different.

Harrison said: “The rest of the band don’t need him.”

To add salt to the wound, Paul McCartney also hit out at the band.

He slammed the Wonderwall performers saying: “They’re derivative and they think too much of themselves. They mean nothing to me.”

His brash thoughts about Oasis did not last, however. He ended up changing his mind about Liam and Noel – but it took almost 20 years to do so.

In 2016 McCartney reminisced about the band while chatting about music with GQ. He said: “Oasis were young, fresh and writing good tunes.”

However, he did have some crucial advice for the group. He noted that they made their “biggest mistake” when they started comparing themselves to another big band.

Oasis famously once said: “We’re going to be bigger than The Beatles.”

McCartney responded to this: “I thought: ‘So many people have said that, and it’s the kiss of death.'”

Ultimately, McCartney wanted what was best for the band. And he even visited them backstage at a gig to show his support for them.

Noel once recalled: “He was the only man to ever walk into an Oasis dressing room and get a standing ovation.”

Oasis asked him: “What are you doing in London?”

He jokingly replied: “I’ve come to the Chelsea Flower Show.”

Liam also praised another member of the Fab Four, revealing how he “could not handle” meeting Ringo Starr in 2019, adding he “had to leave the room”.

He said: “Paul McCartney I was all right with, but Ringo Starr I actually got off. I don’t know, Ringo just freaked me out. I was like: ‘F*****g Ringo man!’ His voice and everything, it was just like, I thought I was tripping. Even his name, Ringo, was just f*****g mind-blowing.”

Despite the criticism Liam received from Harrison, he later explained how fond he was of the star.

Speaking to MTV, Liam said: “I still love The Beatles and I still love George Harrison as a songwriter in The Beatles.”

He added: “But, as a person, I think he’s a f*****g nipple [a derogatory term for being stupid].”
