Grammy nominations 2022: Kanye West, Lil Nas X and Olivia Rodrigo lead the way

The Grammy 2022 nominations have been announced and it’s safe to say, the competition is piping hot.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. and Board of Trustees Chair Tammy Hurt did the honours of announcing the new list of nominees on Tuesday live from the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

Special guests included H.E.R., BTS, Gayle King, Maneskin, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas.

Jon Baptiste is leading this year’s list with an impressive 11 nominations, including album of the year and record of the year. He’s followed by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. with eight nominations each.

Hoping to scoop the coveted album of the year is Jon Bastiste’s We Are, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s Love For Sale, Justin Bieber’s Justice, Doja Cat’s Planet Her, Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever, H.E.R.’s Back Of My Mind, Lil Nas X’s Montero, Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour, Taylor Swift’s Evermore and Kanye West’s Donda.

Going head to head for record of the year are Abba, Justin Bieber, Jon Batiste, Doja Cat, Brandi Carlile, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, Silk Sonic and Billie Eilish.

Up for song of the year are: Ed Sheeran with Bad Habits, Olivia Rodrigo’s Drivers License, Doja Cat’s Kiss Me More, H.E.R.’s Fight For You, Lil Nas X’s Montero (Call Me By Your Name), Justin Bieber’s Peaches and Brandi Carlile’s Right On Time and Alicia Keys’s A Beautiful Noise featuring Brandi Carlile.

Rising stars among the best new artist nominees include: Jimmie Allen, Baby Keem, Finneas, Glass Animals, The Kid Laroi, Arlo Parks, Olivia Rodrigo and Saweetie.

Best pop solo performance nominees include Justin Bieber’s Anyone, Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever, Ariana Grande’s Positions and Olivia Rodriguez’s Drivers License.

Nominations for best R&B performances include Justin Bieber’s Peaches, H.E.R.’s Damage and Silk Sonic’s Leave The Door Open.

Acts receiving nods for best rap performance are: Kendrick Lamar’s Family Ties, Cardi B’s Up, Drake’s Way 2 Sexy, and Megan Thee Stallion’s Thot S**t.

Competing for best rap album are J Cole with The Off-Season, Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, Drake’s Donda, Nas’ King’s Disease II and Tyler, the Creator with Call Me If You Get Lost.

Notably, Jay Z has made history as the most nominated person in Grammy history with 83 nods after earning two more this year for best rap song.

Olivia Rodrigo could also be on course to make history – if she wins all four general field categories, she’ll become just the second woman and the second-youngest person to ever do so.

Mason Jr pre-empted any backlash over the snubs and surprises, and had warned: ‘Some will be extremely happy, and some not so much.’

For the first time, the Grammys has expanded the number of nominees in the core categories from eight to 10, including album of the year and song of the year.

It was previously revealed that a staggering total of 21,730 eligible entries were submitted for Grammys consideration, while more than 11,000 Recording Academy voting members — creators across all genres and disciplines — vote during the Grammys process.

Taylor Swift’s record label had recently announced her re-recorded albums would not be submitted for consideration.

Republic Records confirmed they would instead submit Evermore, her latest wholly original album that was a surprise drop last December.

A representative for the label explained: ‘After careful consideration, Taylor Swift will not be submitting Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in any category at this year’s upcoming Grammy and CMA Awards.

‘Fearless has already won four Grammys including album of the year, as well as the CMA Award for album of the year in 2009/2010 and remains the most awarded country album of all time.’

The 2021 Grammy Awards were shrouded in controversy after The Weeknd, who enjoyed arguably the most successful year of any artist, was sensationally snubbed entirely from the nominations list, sparking backlash from the music industry.

The Grammy Awards 2022 are set to take place on January 31, 2022 live at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
