George Armstrong, best known for his role as Alan Humphries in Grange Hill, has died aged 60.

It has been reported that the star died on Tuesday after a "long battle with leukaemia".

A Grange Hill fan account wrote of the news as they lead tributes to the actor, writing: "I've just heard the very sad news that George Armstrong AKA Alan Humphries passed away yesterday. RIP George. A true Grange Hill legend."

George's first role in television was at Hubert Lane in the film Just William, released in 1977.

But his most famous role was as Alan Humphries in Grange Hill, which aired on BBC and he played until 1982, later reprising the role for the spin off series Tucker's Luck in 1983.

He was well known for his role on the TV drama, but his final role was as PC Driscoll in the 1989 TV series The Bill.

After leaving the TV world, he worked as the Technical Theatre Manager at a school in his local area.

The news of George's passing took his many fans by storm with tributes flooding in for the star online as one person wrote: "RIP sir. Too young. Great childhood memories when growing up watching him and his mate Tucker in the iconic Grange Hill."

Another wrote: "Sad loss, you'll live on forever as Alan Humphries."

A third said: "Such sad news! RIP George. Sending condolences to family and friends. The character of Alan Humphries he made his own."

After the TV series came to an end in 1987, the various actors went on different paths within their career.

George's on-screen best pal went on to play Mark Fowler in EastEnders and was briefly one of the longest serving cast members over 13 years until he left in 2013.

The actor, Todd Carty, briefly returned to Grange Hill in 2003 as Tucker for just one episode and later appeared in the last ever series in 2008.
