Happy Mondays’ Bez can’t remember five years of his life because of drugs

Happy Mondays legend Bez has confessed that he’s had five years of his life wiped from his memory.

The dancer – whose real name is Mark Berry – has bragged about taking drugs like ecstasy in the past.

Bez, 58, said: “What our somewhat reckless passage through those ‘glory years’ also means is that, for me, they’re all a bit of a blur.

"I honestly can’t remember much about that time where we’d finally made it, and we were pop stars jetting all over the place.

"I’ve got so little recollection, it’s actually quite worrying."

In his new book – Buzzin’: The Nine Lives of a Happy Monday – he admitted that he has lost half a decade of memories.

The Celebrity Gogglebox star added: "I often get told stories about myself and I just don’t believe them, but I can’t present any evidence to the contrary, and very often I have no alternative reading of events.

"When it comes to 1989 to 1993, my mind’s a blank, because when you’re living that life, you’re too busy to take notes, and a lot of it just gets forgotten."

He also revealed he once sneaked into Glastonbury after a drugs ban dressed as a Mexican.

Bez evealed: "At Glastonbury 1998, I got arrested by undercover police ‘on suspicion of intent to supply drugs.

“They said I was selling E, but I actually only had one pill on me, so I got nicked for that – one E.

“That morning, someone had given me a drink called ‘The Future’, and everybody who drank one ended up doing some pretty crazy s***.

“When they tried to arrest me, I went a bit insane on this stuff and had a big fight with the police – it took 30 of them to contain me. Believe me, there’s definitely no future in that s***.

“I duly got taken off the site to a custody unit in Yeovil and went to court the next morning, where among other things I was told I wasn’t allowed back into Glastonbury.”

But Bez, 58, explained that he ignored the order and slapped on a disguise instead.

He said: “Damien Hirst’s wife, Maia, came and picked me up after the hearing, and she just happened to have this Mexican costume in the car.

“So, with a big sombrero and a false moustache, which she affixed onto my lip with sticky tape, I reinvented myself as a Mexican, illegally crossing the border into Glastonbury – like Mexicans do, apparently.

“No way was I getting banned from Glastonbury, and the disguise only really convinced the people it was meant to fool – the Old Bill.”
