Holly Hagan told ‘read the room’ after posing in Jesy Nelson ‘Boyz’ costume

Geordie Shore star Holly Hagan has been told to "read the room" after opting to dress as Jesy Nelson for her Halloween look.

The ex-Little Mix singer has been embroiled in a blackfishing row since the release of her debut solo single, Boyz, featuring Nicki Minaj.

Holly wore her hair like Jesy, with a scarlet wig in pig tails with braids, alongside a golfing cap and a matching outfit – just weeks after Jesy faced blackfishing accusations after she released the video.

Jesy's former band-mate Leigh Anne Pinnock spoke to The Telegraph’s Stella Magazine about the claims, explaining: "Capitalising on aspects of blackness without having to endure the daily realities of the black experience is problematic and harmful to people of colour."

Blackfishing refers to a white person appearing to take on black cultural references – which can be done using hairstyles, accents, makeup or even surgery.

And despite the backlash, Holly opted to transform into Jesy for her Halloween look – which left many of her fans unsure on her decision.

In a TikTok video, she can first be seen looking natural in a pink zip-up sports bra and white sweatpants, with her brunette hair hanging loose around her shoulders.

When the transformation is complete, Holly has a scarlet wig identical to Jesy’s with braids held in with beads, plus long acrylic nails to match the singer’s.

Her outfit also featured the yellow, red and green golf cap, pinafore and white shirt and gloves Jesy donned for the video.

Holly had painted on a pale plump lip, sucking on a lollipop as she did so.

But the comments section was immediately furious with her decision as they pointed out how inappropriate the clip appears to be.

One posted: "Didn’t read the room there did you?"

Another said: "Out of the 7 billion people plus all the fictional characters on this planet you went for Jesy Nelson?"

As someone else echoed: "This ain’t a flex…"

"Sis no!" another social media user said.

However, some fans came out in support of Holly as they praised her for refusing to ‘cancel’ Jesy.

"Yes Holly absolutely love it, nice to see someone not trying to cancel Jesy for once!" one fan posted.

Another posted: "So good. Ignore the haters, they are haters for a reason!"

"Absolutely love Jesy, you look incredible. Wish people would get over being nasty about her," someone else chipped in.

Holly also posted a snap of her costume to Instagram, simply captioning the post: "BOYZ." She could also be seen dancing with pals at a club on her Instagram Stories wearing the music video ensemble.
