Brian May and Roger Taylor keep touring as Queen and Adam Lambert to this day, but the last time the band performed live shows as a foursome with both Freddie Mercury and John Deacon was back in 1986. The band’s The Magic tour was their biggest ever, performing in vast venues to audiences of tens of thousands. But less than a year later and Freddie, who admitted he found the string of concerts incredibly tiring, would be diagnosed with AIDS and Queen would stop touring.
The latest episode of Queen the Greatest specifically looks back at the tour the was promoting the band’s A Kind of Magic album.
The set of shows would see the band perform 26 concerts at 20 separate locations in the UK and in nine European countries over a period of just eight weeks.
In archive footage, bassist Deacon said of tour’s heavy burden at the time: “And that’s quite a commitment from us in a way, because Freddie’s sometimes a little reluctant to go on the road these days.”
While footage of Freddie saw the singer say: “It’s been a while since we actually did a tour. It’s very, very exhausting for me to do what I have to do.”
