I Want to Join Whatever Cult Lorde Is Leading

Lorde continues to surprise us in her latest musical era.

The New Zealand–born pop star released her latest single, “Mood Ring,” off her album Solar Power, and the music video is an ethereal (albeit slightly cultish) visual that features Lorde and a crew of backup dancers soaking up the sun in various lush sage-green ensembles. Lorde even switches up her signature brunette tresses for the music video, opting for a vibrant, platinum-blonde wig to transform into a totally new persona. (Anyone else totally getting Nicole Kidman in Nine Perfect Strangers vibes?)

Musically, the song echoes late-’90s or early aughts-inspired folksy tracks (think Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me” or Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”), as Lorde narrates her inner exhaustion over trying to maintain a positive outlook amid our increasingly bleak world, turning to her array of spiritual crystals for existential guidance. In a way, the new track recalls Lorde’s debut breakout track, “Royals,” in that she airs her frustration with society’s obsession with pop culture fodder.

“I’m tryna get well from the inside / Plants and celebrity news, all the vitamins I consume / Let’s fly somewhere eastern, they’ll havе what I need,” Lorde croons on the track. “Let’s go / Ladies, begin your sun salutations / Pluto in Scorpio generation (Love and light) / You can burn sage, and I’ll cleanse the crystals / We can get high, but only if the wind blows.”

The singer recently spoke with The New York Times regarding Solar Power‘s release and why she decided to take a four-year break from music.

“I went back to living my life,” Lorde told the outlet, also expressing that it was “hard for people to understand” the emotional drain that follows relentless album promotion.

“The question I’ve gotten a lot recently is, ‘What have you been doing?'” the star added, clarifying that the break was necessary to separate her personal and professional livelihoods. “I’m like, ‘Oh, no, no, no—this is a break from my life.’ I come back and perform these duties because I believe in the album.”
