Inside Strictly star John Whaite’s sweet 12-year romance with fiancé Paul Atkins

Bake Off star John Whaite is going down in the history books as the first celebrity to dance with another man on Strictly Come Dancing.

The TV baker is no stranger to reality TV competitions though, because he shot to fame as the winner of the third series of The Great British Bake Off in 2012.

32-year-old John has become a familiar face on television as a regular presenter on Steph's Packed Lunch on Channel 4.

He's now set to make history on the hit BBC One show as one half of the first ever male dancing pair, having been partnered up with Strictly pro Johannes Radebe.

It comes after Olympic boxer Nicola Adams was paired up with Katya Jones as they became the first ever same-sex and all-female partnership on the show.

John has been with his partner, Paul Atkins, for over twelve years – and the pair live in Leeds.

John's fiancé Paul works as a graphic designer, and he seems to like staying out of the limelight as he keeps off of social media.

They prefer to keep their relationship out of the public eye, but John occasionally shares sweet snaps of the two on his social media accounts.

The couple even appeared together on the cover of Attitude magazine back in 2014.

It has been reported that John and Paul met online through Facebook back in 2008, when they were both living in Manchester.

John was crowned the winner of Bake Off in 2012, but the couple clearly stayed strong amid John's newfound fame.

In 2017, the couple took things to the next level when John announced that he and Paul had become engaged.

Taking to Instagram in June of that year, John shared a rare snap of the pair as he wrote: "My true love. We've decided to get married.

"We've fought for these rights and we shall use them"

John and Paul spilled the gossip on their future wedding back in 2014 – despite not being engaged at the time.

Speaking about how they would tie the knot, Paul revealed that he would prefer a "low-key affair" over a lavish wedding, stating that his ideal wedding venue would be an English country house.

Last month, John announced that he had been looking forward to celebrating Pride weekend in Manchester, but was unable to attend due to his Strictly stint.

Alongside a sweet snap of himself and Paul, he wrote: "Happy Pride, Manchester. We were so looking forward to celebrating love & life this weekend with sparkles and cocktails and high-kicks, but alas I’m being a careful little hermit until after Strictly Come Dancing is done.

"I’ll be sat at home in my sequinned dressing gown cheering you all on with kebab on my face and wine dribbling down my chin. Love to you all."

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturdays on BBC One.
