Jeremy Clarkson has issued an apology after his scathing column about Meghan Markle.

He has said that he is "horrified to have caused so much hurt" and "shall be more careful in future" after facing backlash.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, December 19, days after his column was published in The Sun, Jeremy penned: "Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it.

"In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people."

He then concluded with: "I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future."

This came after he wrote a column in The Sun which was highly criticised by celebrities far and wide, including the likes of Carol Vorderman and John Bishop.

Jeremy's daughter Emily Clarkson, who is currently pregnant with her first child, even stood against her famous father.

In his column for the paper, the 62-year-old said: "I hate her [Meghan]. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.

"At night, I'm unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at her.

"Everyone who's my age thinks the same way."

After Jeremy's naked dream of Meghan was published, he sparked a mass uproar among the general public.

His own daughter Emily, who runs a podcast and has a substantial online following of more than 200,000, even weighed in.

In view of her followers, the podcast host took to Instagram and penned: "My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.

"I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain standing in support of those that are targeted with online hatred."

Although Jeremy has now issued a statement that addresses the comments he made, the general public aren't impressed.

One person replied to the former Top Gear star's tweet and said: "It's not that it was clumsy, it's that your mind went there in the first place. You need to be more than 'careful'. You need to take a long hard look at your attitude toward women."

Another then asked: "What about the bit where you said she was worse than a serial killer? Was that also a ‘clumsy reference’?"
