Kate Moss explains why she ‘had to’ testify in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial

Kate Moss has spoken out explaining why she testified on behalf of her ex-beau Johnny Depp in his legal battle against Amber Heard.

The notoriously private supermodel appeared as a witness in the high-profile court case in May via video link, where she denied the rumour that Depp had once pushed her down the stairs during an argument when they were dating between 1994 and 1998.

Moss has now revealed she felt compelled to testify, claiming she knew “the truth.”

She told BBC Radio 4: "I know the truth about Johnny, I know he never kicked me down the stairs. I had to say that truth."

At the time of her testimony, Moss had said: “We were leaving the room, Johnny left before I did, and there had been a rain storm. As I left the room, I slid down the stairs and I hurt my back.

“I screamed because I didn’t know what had happened to me and I was in pain. He came running back to help me and carried me back to my room, and got me medical attention.”

Moss added that Depp “never pushed me, kicked me, or threw me down any stairs”.

Speaking on the stand after Moss denied the claim, Heard said: "Everybody who was around in the '90s and the early naughts knew that rumour. I had heard that rumour from multiple people.

“Of course, that's what flashed through my head when my violent husband not only swung for me but all of a sudden swung for my sister. Of course, I thought of that."

"I did not expect her to show up or not expect her to show up. It didn't matter.

"It doesn't change what I believed at the time when we were on the stairs and I thought he was gonna kill my sister by pushing her down the stairs."

Depp sued Heard for defamation over an op-ed article Aquaman actress Amber Heard wrote in 2018 about surviving abuse.

Although the article did not mention Depp by name, the actor argued it damaged his career.

Heard countersued, but the jury ruled in favour of Depp, who was awarded $10million (£8million) in compensatory damages and $5million in punitive damages.

Heard was awarded $2million after the jury found that Depp had defamed her through his attorney.
