Mick Hucknall got burgled so many times he kept an axe by the door

Mick Hucknall got burgled so many times he kept an axe for self-defence.

The Simply Red singer, 62, lived in a risky part of town at the start of his pop career.

Hucknall, whose hits include Something Got Me Started, Stars and Fairground, said: “We were living in Hulme in Moss Side, the roughest part of Manchester. We kept getting burgled and we had an axe by the door.

“I’m 21 and thnking, ‘Is this how it’s gonna be? I’ve got to get out of here’.”

Mick’s fortunes changed as he scored a slew of hits and the band became globally famous.

He told the Rockonteurs podcast he was glad they were not part of the Manchester music scene involving impresario Tony Wilson’s Factory Records, best known for acts like Joy Division.

Mick added: “Factory were so f***ing miserable! It was all black and gloom and darkness.

“We were happy-go-lucky kids, half of our time we’d rehearse for a couple of hours and then be off to the pub.”

Meanwhile, Mick has announced that Simply Red is going on a European tour this summer following the release of their latest album, Time.

The singer is also set to appear at a UK date before they head on the road as he spoke about the exciting news on The One Show.

He said: "We've got to do a bit of a warmup, you know, to get into the swing of it.

"So we've decided we're going to do a little warm up show in Shepherd's Bush Empire on I think is June the 5th.

"Any of the fans out there can go to simplyred.com and get all the information there."
