After One Direction split up in 2015 their dedicated fans have been yearning for some sort of reunion. Last year marked the band’s 10-year anniversary, leaving many people hoping the five band members would get together once again – but to no avail. Now, following rumours about a reunion behind the scenes, the odds have been in the favour of 1D getting back together before the end of 2021. But things have just changed – and not for the better.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Eternals
This week the latest Marvel movie, Eternals, had its red carpet premiere in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
After the movie had rolled credits, a number of US journalists began tweeting about a surprise newcomer to the series: Styles.
Matt Donnelly, a film writer from Variety, wrote online: “Big reveal from #TheEternals premiere – Harry Styles has joined the MCU as Eros, brother of Thanos.”
At the moment this report has not been confirmed, but the news itself has destroyed the odds of the band’s reunion.
Last month Ladbrokes gave 1/2 odds on One Direction getting back together before the end of 2021.
Now, these odds have been increased dramatically.
The bookies has now given 1D 6/4 odds on reuniting in the next 12 months.
Niall Horan reflects on time in One Direction with Dermot O’Leary
Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati said: “It’s bad news for Directioners all over the world and if the latest Harry Styles rumours are to be believed, then it could be some time before we see the band back together.
“The singer-turned-actor’s schedule is only getting more hectic, and the odds of a sensational 1D reunion have taken a massive hit as a result.”
Apati’s comments have some merit to them, as Styles would have to commit a lot of time to One Direction if they were going to get back together.
But, if he has truly joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a new villain, he will no doubt be giving up a lot of his schedule to maintain the ever-expanding comic book world.
Last month fellow former 1D member Liam Payne revealed he thought the band were overdue to get back together.
The Strip That Down singer was quizzed over whether the band had already started discussing bringing themselves back together.
He said: “I don’t know… I definitely think it will happen!
“But, I think everyone is just enjoying their solo work at the moment. Yeah… we’ll see.”
Liam also revealed he has recently been speaking to another member of the band: Louis Tomlinson.
He said: “I spoke to Louis [Tomlinson] the other day and we were just saying… It’s got to happen sooner than later!”
Payne added with a smirk: “So, that’s my only update on that one.”
