Just a decade after The Beatles split, John Lennon was tragically assassinated in New York City on December 8, 1980. Alongside Paul McCartney, he remains the most successful musician of all time. This week, fans and those who knew him have been posting tributes to the star who has now been dead longer than he was alive.

The Beatles drummer shared a snap on Instagram of himself and Lennon performing, along with the caption: “Peace and love my friend.”

Olivia Harrison, the widow of George Harrison, put out a picture of her late husband with the star sitting outside together.

She captioned it: “Yoko, Sean and Julian. Sending love and thoughts to you today.

“That was the great thing about John and what I got from him, from all those years.”
