Sir Tom Jones has been performing professionally for an incredible 60 years and shows no sign of stopping. Over the years, the national treasure has come in contact with the Royal Family on a number of occasions – most recently singing Delilah and Mama Told Me Not to Come at The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert in 2012. And back in 1969 had an infamous encounter with Prince Philip.
After singing at the Royal Variety Performance that year, Prince Philip asked Sir Tom, “What do you gargle with, pebbles?” The next day the Queen’s husband made another one of his famous gaffes when he added: “It’s difficult to see how it’s possible to become immensely valuable by singing what are the most hideous songs.”
And on another occasion talking about how difficult it is to get rich in Britain, the Duke said: “What about Tom Jones? He’s made a million and he’s a bloody awful singer.”

Nevertheless, the 82-year-old star obviously took it all in his stride writing on Instagram after news of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death in 2021: “Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh: an incredible individual who always reminded us we are all human. Forever grateful, Sir Tom Jones.”
And now the singer has been honoured by having one of his biggest hits selected for King Charles III”s official Coronation Celebration Playlist on Spotify. The playlist of 27 songs has been hand-selected on behalf of His Majesty by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and includes both classic and modern favourites. But can you guess which of Sir Tom’s made it on?

The 26th track on King’s official Coronation Celebration Playlist is Green Green, Grass of Home. Claude “Curly” Putman’s Jr’s 1965 song was originally recorded by Johnny Darrell and Jerry Lee Lewis among others before Tom Jones made it a country hit after hearing the latter. The Welsh singer’s cover was a worldwide No 1 and has sold over 1.25 million copies since. He even ended up having a duet of the song with Lewis back in September 2006 for a Last Man Standing TV special.
