Taylor Swift leads history-making VMA nominations with world record on the line

Taylor Swift's voice breaks during emotional Chicago performance

Taylor Swift is set to break records in September as the MTV Video Music Awards nominees were announced last night.

The 33-year-old has been nominated for a staggering eight awards, and with 14 VMAs behind her already the Lover singer could become the most-award artist in the awards’ history.

The current record is held by Madonna, who has won 20 awards over her 40-year-long career, meaning Taylor Swift would need to collect six awards on September 13 to sidle in next to the Like A Virgin singer.

Seven wins on music’s biggest night will put the singer’s name down in history as the most-award artist of all time while just three would place Taylor ahead of Beyonce.

She also has the potential to extend some of her other records at the awards if she wins the highly lauded Video of the Year award, becoming the first artist to ever collect the achievement four times.

But, the Pennsylvania native has some staunch competition in the category as her self-directed Anti-Hero music video will have to stand up against Flowers by Miley Cyrus, Attention by Doja Cat, Super Freaky Girl by Nicki Minaj, Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo, Kill Bill by SZA as well as Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ smash hit Unholy.

Taylor, who is in the midst of her record-breaking Eras tour, is nominated for Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing.

However, even if by some fluke the Cardigan hitmaker goes home empty handed she will still go down in VMA history thanks to her nomination in the Artist of the Year category.

Also up for this award is Beyonce, Doja Cat, Karol G, Nicki Minaj and Shakira, making it the first all-female lineup for the category in history.

This is also the first time in history that two Latin artists have been nominated for the award, with Karol G and Shakira.

The pair will also likely be looking to extend the record made by Bad Bunny last year as he became the first Latino to ever win the award.
