The Breakfast Club stars now – asbestos death, paternity battle and assault

Teen-comedy Hollywood drama The Breakfast Club took the world by storm in 1985 and quickly became regarded as one of the most iconic movies in history.

Following the stories of five teenagers who spend nine hours together in detention while at Shermer High School, the film portrayed comedic elements as well as several heartwarming moments.

The movie received favourable attention from the press at the time and the media referred to the film's five main actors as members of the "Brat Pack".

Directed by John Hughes The Breakfast Club received critical acclaim and earned $51.5 million on a $1 million budget.

Now over 35 years since the film hit theatres, Daily Star has taken a look at where the stars are now.

Molly Ringwald as Claire Standish

American actress Molly Ringwald took on the iconic role of Claire Standish who was a popular school girl at Shermer High.

Claire was given detention because she went shopping instead of going to class.

Following on from the success of the movie, actress Molly continued to gain steady work in Hollywood and starred in films Sixteen Candles, Teaching Mrs. Tingle and 1986’s Pretty in Pink.

Though she was still hot property in the American film circuit, it was reported that she turned down the female lead roles in Pretty Woman and Ghost in the 1990s.

During the 2000s, Molly took a break from making movies but still appeared in small television roles.

In 2018, Molly wrote a candid essay for the New Yorker, examining The Breakfast Club in the Me Too era.

The star also highlighted the scene in which John looked under Claire's skirt while hiding from Mr. Vernon, which she said she now considers to be problematic.

The actress explained: "Bender sexually harasses Claire throughout the film.

"When he's not sexualizing her, he takes out his rage on her with vicious contempt, calling her 'pathetic,' mocking her as 'Queenie.' It's rejection that inspires his vitriol."

In more recent times, Molly has starred in Riverdale and Creepshow.

Judd Nelson as John Bender

Judd Nelson played troublemaker John Bender in the film who spent most of his time ripping pages out of books and terrorising Claire.

After the movie's release, Nelson reunited with his Breakfast Club costars Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy for the 1985 flick St. Elmo's Fire.

He also went on to star in the '90s sitcom Suddenly Susan alongside actress Brooke Shields.

Throughout the course of his career, the actor made guest appearances in Two and a Half Men, Psych and CSI: NY.

He also voiced characters on Family Guy, Phineas and Ferb, Ben 10: Omniverse, and several animated Transformers series.

When talking about his career and the diverse characters he's played, Judd explained that he didn't always receive big opportunities.

Speaking to The A.V club he said: "I think that sometimes you don't have the opportunities for some of the most A-list-type movies, big-budget movies.

"But I think it's important to keep working and make the best of what's available."

Emilio Estevez as Andrew Clark

American actor Emilio Estevez was already known in Hollywood as the son of Charlie Sheen and played the loveable character Andrew Clark in the Breakfast Club.

Andrew didn't want to disappoint his father and felt constant pressure to always win.

Throughout the years Emilio had a steady acting career and went on to star in films such as The Mighty Ducks and Mission: Impossible.

He also wrote and directed movies too and will be releasing his film Young Guns III: Alias: Billy the Kid in 2022.

However, his personal life often hit headlines during the 80s as became entangled in high-profile relationships.

In the early 1980s, the actor dated actress Mimi Roger however he was also involved in an off and on with a relationship with model, Carey Salley.

The Breakfast Club star shares two children with Carey however their romantic connection overlapped Emilio's high-profile engagement to Demi Moore, with whom he was with intermittently from 1984 to 1986.

In 1987, Carey filed a $2 million paternity suit against Emilio which was acknowledged in 1987.

In April 1992, Estevez married singer-choreographer Paula Abdul however they divorced two years later due to Paula wanting children.

Anthony Michael Hall as Brian Johnson

Actor Anthony Michael Hall played bookworm Brian Johnson who was part of the maths club.

The actor went on to guest star on Murder, She Wrote, Entourage, and CSI: Miami.

He also played the villain in the Tim Burton movie Edward Scissorhands and had a very small part in The Dark Knight.

However, in 2017 the actor had a run-in with the law and was sentenced to three years of probation and 40 hours of community service due to an argument he had with a neighbour.

The Hollywood star pleaded no contest to charges that he assaulted his neighbor in an argument that escalated to a physical confrontation.

During their argument, it was reported that Anthony broke his neighbor's wrist.

Despite the controversy, the actor continued to work and most recently guest-starred in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Goldbergs.

Ally Sheedy as Allison Reynolds

Misfit Allison Reynolds was played by actress Ally Sheedy who had an "unsatisfying" home life.

Following her role in The Breakfast Club, the actress continued to star in a number of films including High Art, Sugar Town and A Good Night to Die.

She also took on small television roles too but hasn't appeared on screens since 2016 until starring in TV series Single White Female last month.

In 2018, Ally also became outspoken regarding the Me Too movement as she blamed James Franco for being the reason why she turned her back on Hollywood for several years.

After the 2018 Golden Globes, the Breakfast Club star took to social media and shared cryptic tweets about actor James Franco, who previously directed her in an off-Broadway production and had been accused of sexual misconduct.

She tweeted: "James Franco just won. Please never ever ask me why I left the film/tv business," but later deleted the post.

Speaking about the tweet, James denied knowing what Ally was referring to.

Paul Gleason as Richard Vernon

Actor Paul Gleason played the role of strict teacher Richard Vernon.

Before the Breakfast Club, Paul was already a well-known star in Hollywood having appeared in a number of films since the early 60s.

But after the release of the iconic 80s classic, Paul went on to star in Loaded Weapon 1, Not Another Teen Movie and National Lampoon's Van Wilder.

He also made an appearance in sitcoms Friends and Dawson's Creek.

Unfortunately, Paul died in 2006 from mesothelioma, which is a form of lung cancer that's connected to asbestos.

The star's body is buried near the southeast corner of the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Westwood, Los Angeles.
