Tiger King star Jeff Johnson has died by suicide at the age of 58, police have confirmed, just days after the second series of the Netflix hit was released.

The former reptile dealer took his own life in front of a family member, according to a police report obtained by TMZ.

The second season of Tiger King launched just days ago, however Jeff does not appear. He was in the fourth episode of the 2020 hit series.

Jeff killed himself in September in front of his wife, according to the Oklahoma City Police Department.

He was reportedly arguing with his wife in their garage on September 8 while their children were at home too.

At one point during the argument, Jeff pulled out a handgun and shot himself in the head.

His wife called 911 for attempted suicide and when officers arrived Jeff reportedly still had a pulse and was rushed to hospital.

Sadly, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to the police report, Jeff's wife said he had not been having any issues with his mental health or tried to take his own life before, so the reason behind the tragic incident is not yet clear.

Jeff was only in one episode of Tiger King's first season when it was released last year, with him explaining the drama between Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin.

It's believed that Joe and Jeff used to be friends too, but eventually fell out.

The duo are thought to have been friends due to them both working in the exotic animals trade, but fell out when Jeff Lowe got involved.

The second season of Tiger King launched on Netflix last week, with the sequel documenting Joe's attempts to be freed from prison, while also delving into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Baskin's husband Don Lewis.

Tiger King is available to stream on Netflix.
