UK Eurovision entry’s Sam Ryder bagged record deal after viral lockdown TikToks

Could TikTok be the answer to the UK overcoming its nil points humiliation from our last attempt at Eurovision?

Though last year was the worst of UK's shots at Eurovision, no UK act has topped voting charts since Katrina and the Waves in 1997.

Hopes are that things will be different this year, with viral social media star Sam Ryder representing the country at Turin, Italy where the 66th Eurovision Song Contest will take place on May 14.

Speaking of the opportunity, Sam said: "Having been a fan of Eurovision since I was a kid I am so honoured to have been presented with the opportunity to sing at an event alongside some of Europe’s most talented creatives, performers and songwriters."

He added: "I hope to sing my head off in a way the UK can be proud of, and to showcase a song I wrote with my friends last summer makes the whole experience even more special. See you in Turin, legends!"

Here's everything you need to know about Sam Ryder, TikTok star turned Eurovision hopeful.

Who is Sam Ryder?

Sam Ryder went big on TikTok during the pandemic with pop music covers that caught the attention of singers like Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa and Alicia Keys.

The online sensation, who has around 12 million followers, went on to secure a record deal with Warner Music Group label Parlophone, which boasts huge acts like Coldplay and David Guetta.

From viral song covers online to then wracking up 100 million global streams for his 2021 debut EP The Sun’s Gonna Rise – and selling out tours to now representing the country in Eurovision – the powerhouse talent has come a very long way in super-quick time.

How was Sam Ryder chosen to represent UK in Eurovision?

In the past, the British public had a say in who would be the UK entry to Eurovision. However, the decision is now made by the BBC and music management company TaP Music.

TaP Music co-founders Ben Mawson and Ed Millett said: "The Eurovision Song Contest is truly a cultural phenomenon and an amazing opportunity – with 200 million viewers – for the right performer."

On choosing Sam Ryder as this year's Eurovision entry, they added: "As well as Sam having an amazing voice – Space Man is an instant song that we’re confident will really connect. Not to mention he’s also an extremely likeable and engaging character – as evidenced by his TikTok following."
