Where Indiana Jones stars are now – co-worker romance, knighthood and sad deaths

Indiana Jones is one of the biggest action film franchises of all time, raking hundreds of millions in the box office.

Created by George Lucas and Steven Spielburg, the series has seen a whopping five films with actor Harrison Ford playing the iconic character.

With the first film being released in 1981, and the latest being released in 2022, it has seen countless actors appear in the film alongside the famous archaeologist.

Daily Star has taken a walk down memory lane to see where the biggest stars of the show are now after 40 years of the movie being on screens.

Harrison Ford

Played: Indiana Jones in all four films

After Star Wars shot him to fame, Ford’s turn as Indy cemented his leading man status. He has gone to star in more than 80 Hollywood films including The Fugitive and Air Force One, as well as reprising his role as Han Solo in the Star Wars reboot.

The dad-of-five is married to Ally McBeal actress Calista Flockhart and is a licenced pilot and environmental activist.

John Rhys-Davies

Played: Sallah in Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade.

Welshman Rhys-Davies played Indy’s Egyptian pal and guide but he’s probably best known for playing dwarf Gimli in the Lord of the Rings films.

Dad-of-three Rhys-Davies has worked on TV and film constantly since.

His first wife died from Alzheimer’s in 2010 and Rhys-Davies, 77, now splits his time between the Isle of Man and New Zealand with partner Lisa Manning.

Karen Allen

Played: Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Indy’s first love interest came back on the scene in the most recent film to reveal they had a son together.

In real life Karen went on to star opposite Jeff Bridges in Starman and as Bill Murray’s long-lost love in Scrooged. Still acting, these days the divorced mum-of-one, 69, also has her own textile company.

Jonathan Ke Quan

Played: Short Round in Temple of Doom

Indy’s loveable young sidekick is now 49 years old! The film was Vietnam-born Ke Quan’s first role and he then appeared in The Goonies the following year.

While filming Temple of Doom, he learned martial arts and later worked as a stunt choreographer. After taking a break from acting since 2002 he is back in upcoming sci-fi film Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Amrish Puri

Played: Mola Ram in Temple of Doom

Ram was the evil high priest who met a sticky end in crocodile-infested waters. Indian actor Puri was mainly known for playing Bollywood villains, starring in more than 450 films, and also appeared in Gandhi.

Suffering from blood cancer, he died in 2005 aged 72 after undergoing brain surgery.

Kate Capshaw

Played: Willie Scott in Temple of Doom

Nightclub singer and damsel in distress Willie was the romantic interest – but it sparked a real-life love story when actress Capshaw wed the film’s director Steven Spielberg.

Work-wise she had roles in films including 1989’s Black Rain but retired from acting in 2001. Between them, Capshaw and Spielberg have seven children.

Denholm Elliott

Played: Marcus Brody in Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Last Crusade

The BAFTA-winning British actor – Indy’s university colleague in the films – appeared in Trading Places and A Room with a View. A WW2 veteran, he was secretly bisexual and had a brief marriage to Born Free actress Virginia McKenna.

Elliott was diagnosed with HIV in 1987 and died of AIDS-related tuberculosis at his home in Ibiza in 1992 aged 70.

River Phoenix

Played: Young Indy in the Last Crusade

Phoenix, one of Hollywood’s most promising young actors, had a critically-acclaimed role in 1991 film My Own Private Idaho. But on October 31, 1993, he died aged 23 on the pavement outside LA club The Viper Room after overdosing on heroin and cocaine.

His last film role was in Dark Blood, which wasn’t completed until 2012.

Alison Doody

Played: Elsa Schneider in the Last Crusade

Irish actress Doody was in flick Major League II and had roles in Waking the Dead and Danny Dyer-directed film The Rapture. In 1994, she married Irish media tycoon Gavin O’Reilly and they had two children, but divorced in 2006.

While filming E4 drama Beaver Falls, she met partner Douglas De Jager but he died of a heart attack a year later in 2012.

Julian Glover

Played: Walter Donovan in the Last Crusade

Donovan was the evil industrialist who was killed when a fake Grail made him age rapidly.

Glover had roles in Casualty and Holby City, and voiced the giant spider Aragog in the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

He also played Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones but was brutally killed off at the end of the sixth series.

Sean Connery

Played: Henry Jones Sr in the Last Crusade

After his role as Indiana’s father, former 007 Connery acted in a string of films including The Hunt for Red October. He was knighted by the Queen in 2000, voted the Sexiest Man of the Century in 1999 and the Greatest Living Scot in 2004.

He officially retired from acting in 2006 and died last year aged 90 at his home in the Bahamas.

Cate Blanchett

Played: Irina Spalko in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Oscar-winner Blanchett is now one of the world’s highest-paid actresses after her turns in other hit franchises, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, Thor: Ragnarok as well as Ocean’s 8.

She now lives in a lavish country manor in East Sussex with husband Andrew Upton and their four children.

Ray Winstone

Played: George ‘Mac’ Michale in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Known for his hardman’ roles, Winstone more recently starred in panned 2019 film Cats. Away from acting, he courted controversy in 2013 when he hosted Have I Got News for You and said Scotland’s chief exports were “oil, whisky, tartan and tramps”. A fan of West Ham, he promoted their 2009 kit.

Shia LeBeouf

Played: Mutt Williams in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

In 2014, LeBeouf – who was Indy’s secret son in the film – appeared on the red carpet at the premiere for sexy flick Nymphomaniac wearing a paper bag with ‘I am not famous anymore’ written on it. He went on to date and marry Nymphomaniac co-star Mia Goth, but they divorced in 2018.

LeBeouf then dated singer FKA Twigs for a year, and she sued him for abuse. He has since taken a break from acting following the accusations.
