Host of iconic quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Puneeth Rajkumar, has tragically died aged just 46.

Puneeth hosted the Indian version of the hit ITV quiz, which in the UK is currently hosted by Jeremy Clarkson after he took over the role from Chris Tarrant.

Puneeth was working out at the gym when he first complained of suffering chest pains, and was rushed to a Bangalore hospital at 11.30 on Friday.

He died today (October 29) of a cardiac arrest, the Times of India reports.

However, before he tragically passed away Puneeth was in good spirits – even taking to social media to cheer on the cast and crew of upcoming Indian action film Bhajarangi 2.

He tweeted: "Best wishes for the entire team of #Bhajarangi2", tagging in his pals from the flick.

Puneeth took on the role of host of Kannadada Kotyadhipati – an Indian quiz show inspired by Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, in 2012.

But aside from his TV presenting career, he was also a prolific actor and starred in a huge array of films in his home country.

Puneeth was also a playback singer – with two Filmfare nominations in the category of Best Male Playback Singer.

Playback singers have their voices pre-recorded for use in films, including recording songs for soundtracks and syncing their voices to that of the actors starring in the flick.

Tributes have already begun pouring in for the late star, with his fellow actor Mahesh Babu tweeting: "Shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic news of Puneeth Rajkumar's demise.

"One of the most humble people I've met and interacted with. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones."

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted: A cruel twist of fate has snatched away from us a prolific and talented actor, Puneeth Rajkumar. This was no age to go.

"The coming generations will remember him fondly for his works and wonderful personality. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti [peace]."

While another fan wrote: "Shocking and Heart breaking to know that Puneeth is no more. It is a huge loss for the film fraternity. My deepest condolences to Puneeth's family and loved ones. RIP."

"This hurts so much! Rest in peace superstar! May the family, friends and the millions of fans have the strength to tide through this sorrow!" another added.
