I’m a firm believer that aliens exist, writes Most Haunted star Yvette Fielding. I certainly don’t think we are being visited by little green men flashing their lizard mutant eyes, but I do think there are definitely other intelligent life forms out there and that through the centuries they have certainly made their presence known to us.
My favourite UFO sighting, and I believe the most famous in the UK and possibly the world is that of the Rendlesham case.
Rendlesham Forest makes up 4,000 acres of beautiful woodland in the county of Suffolk. It hasn't always been a tranquil nature hotspot, however – during the Second World War, most of the forest was cleared to make way for the construction of RAF Woodbridge, a place where battle-weary planes would limp back home after bombing raids and arial dogfights.
But that wasn't its last use. The RAF base was utilised again during the Cold War by the United States Air force – and it was during their occupation that Rendlesham became known for something else entirely.
Something out of this world.
In December of 1980, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt sent a letter to the Ministry of Defence. In it, he describes how his personnel reported the sighting of a UFO.
The memo goes on to describe one of the best UFO sightings on record.
On Boxing Day, in the early hours of the morning a security detail that was patrolling the east gate of the base saw some strange red lights falling slowly into the forest.
Three servicemen went into the wood to take a closer look, presuming a downed aircraft had fallen into the trees – but what they discovered was to affect the servicemen for the rest of their lives.
Two of the men, Jim Penniston and John Burrows, went further into the dense forest and encountered a small triangular shaped object that had landed and was stationary. It was ten feet wide at the base and looked like a cross between a small stealth fighter plane and a lunar landing module.
The thing, whatever it was, rested on three legs, and both men remembered thinking that there was no way that an object could have been driven into the woods as the trees were too dense. Also, no vehicle track marks were visible.
Apparently, Jim Penniston got close enough to touch the side of the object and noticed some strange hieroglyphic-type markings on the side of the craft. He placed his hand on the side of the UFO and instantly, hundreds of numbers flashed in his head.
What these numbers were, he didn’t know – but for years the numbers plagued him. Jim made notes and drew diagrams of the UFO. He also jotted down all the numbers that had flashed into his head. He seemed to be able to remember them all and in the right sequence.
Two nights later the UFO appeared again, and this time Lieutenant Colonel Halt witnessed the unidentified craft too. Charles Halt was a sceptic, and upon hearing that the UFO had returned he personally led a team back into the forest.
He took a tape recorder with him and made voice notes as he walked into the forest.
"It's definitely coming this way… pieces of it are shooting off… this is so weird," the recording said.
According to the lieutenant's account, the UFO was floating above them. He witnessed different coloured lights separating off from each other. One bright white light then allegedly fired a bright beam in front of the officers.
Colonel Charles Holt did enquire if the object had been tracked on satellite and it was confirmed that it had – and had been recorded travelling at thousands of miles an hour.
The object had then stopped abruptly above Rendlesham Forest. The military radar target operative was quoted saying: "It wasn’t like any radar target I’ve seen."
The ground site in the forest was checked, and according to reported documents scorch marks were noted on the ground and on the trees. Radiation levels above the landing site and surrounding area were unusually high.
But what of the binary code that Jim Penniston’s brain seemed to have downloaded? Well, this is the bit that blows my mind.
Apparently, a binary expert was called in to see if there was a hidden message within the code, and after hours of searching through the code there was indeed.
Translated into English, it read: "Exploration of humanity continuous for planetary advance.
"Eyes of our eyes. Origin year 8100."
Following on from this mind-blowing information was a list of earth coordinates mapping out sites of worship and power. These included the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, Nazca Lines in Peru and the Temple of Apollo in Greece.
But the one earth coordinate that really intrigues me is for a sunken island off the coast of Southwest Ireland. An island that has only been recorded on ancient maps and is written about in Celtic mythology.
This place is called Hy-Brasil, and according to legend was the home to a race of advanced beings.
Many years later Jim Penniston was regressed, and under hypnosis revealed that the craft didn’t come from an alien life-force at all – it was in fact said to be humans, returning to earth to leave him a message.
So, has Mr Penniston tapped into time travel? Are our future selves keeping an eye on the mess we're making? Did we travel back in time from 8100?
And the biggest question of all… Have we investigated the sunken Island of Hy-Brasil? And if so, would we know of its findings?
There is so much more to this story – I’m just waiting for Mr Spielberg to make the movie.
