One of the most internationally renowned airlines has confirmed one of its planes had a close encounter at the weekend.

American Airlines has confirmed reports that a flight between Cincinnati and Phoenix on Sunday, February 21, had a near miss with an unidentified flying object.

The crew of American Airlines Flight 2292 describe the UFO that buzzed them as they passed over Des Moines, New Mexico as a “long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile"

Just before twenty past one, local time, the pilot of AA 2292 called Albuquerque air traffic control to request information on the bizarre sighting.

In an audio clip of the message captured by an amateur aviation enthusiast, the pilot can be heard asking: "Do you have any targets up here?

"We just had something go right over the top of us," the pilot added. "I hate to say this but it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile type of thing – moving really fast right over the top of us."

While American Airlines initially played down the report, company spokesperson has now confirms the incident, “Following a debrief with our Flight Crew and additional information received,” they said, “we can confirm this radio transmission was from American Airlines Flight 2292 on Feb. 21.”

While the sighting was made close to the US military’s White Sands Missile Range as well as a number of other military facilities, no military traffic or weapons tests were reported in the area on Sunday.

The Drive reports that this isn’t the first close encounter with an anomalous object over the region. The pilots of two separate aircraft told Albuquerque air traffic control about a mystery object flying close to them.

The pilot of a Phoenix Air Group Lear Jet, and Blenus Green, a former USAF bomber pilot who was flying an American Airlines Airbus, both saw the weird object on February 24, 2018.

Blenus described how he had heard the Lear Jet pilot call in the sighting and decided to try to see if he could spot the mystery intruder himself: "So sure enough,” he told Bigcountry.com, “I was looking out the windscreen to see if it was there, and yeah, I did. I saw it!"

"It was very bright, but it wasn't so bright you couldn't look at it. You almost really wanted to look at it, to try to figure out what it was. It didn't look anything like an airplane."
