A chilling new documentary delves into the Bigfoot myth surrounding the grisly unsolved murders of men working on cannabis farms.

Filmmaker Joshua Rofé's new docuseries "Sasquatch" centres around the notorious Emerald Triangle in California where three men were ripped apart by an unknown attacker in 1993.

Bizarrely, the killings were not the swift "gangland" style executions of drug dealers and the crops were said to have been left untouched.

David Holthouse, an investigative journalist who worked on the series with Rofé, said he was coincidentally in the area that same night and heard a survivor frantically talk about the slaughter and mention "Bigfoot".

In the trailer, he says: "He said a Bigfoot killed three guys. A Bigfoot 'murdered' those guys. On a dope farm."

The legendary creature, said to resemble a giant ape, is one of North America's most enduring myths and Humboldt County, in the Emerald Triangle, is a hotspot of alleged "Bigfoot" activity.

In Rofé's documentary, believers recount horrifying tales of run-ins with the beast and – while the filmmaker is skeptical – he doesn't believe they are outright lying.

Rofé told The Guardian: "I was struck by the visceral fear present in all these encounter stories.

"I was taken by how afraid these people were, which was totally authentic."

He also spoke of how intimidating many of the growers he encountered were, carrying automatic weapons and insisting on meeting in remote areas of the forest.

There are also numerous "missing person" posters dotted around the county, he said, heightening the visible danger and tension.

"In a way I wasn’t before I embarked on this weird adventure, I am now truly afraid of the woods," he told the title.

Rofé' warned that it's probably not a good idea to get stoned while viewing the nailbiting docuseries, adding: "If you get paranoid when you get high, you probably don’t want to be high while watching this.

"It can be scary, in the way that creeps up on you.

"You can make it scarier for yourself, turn it all 3D."
