Snow falling in two different deserts this week has some convinced it's a Biblical prophecy come true – and it could foretell the end times.

On Sunday it snowed in Saudi Arabia's Asir Province for the first time in 50 years, with local media reporting temperatures fell below a shiver-inducing -2C.

The previous Wednesday it had also snowed in the Algerian town of Ain Sefra, which is commonly known as the Gateway to the Sahara.

It's now the fourth consecutive winter that snow or ice has been reported in the typically dry region, but before that, it had been a stretch of 37 years since the last snowfall.

Many different places around the northern hemisphere have experienced unusually cold weather this winter, including in India, China and the United Arab Emirates.

Delhi saw its coldest weather in 119 years, while Spain hit a new record for low winter temperatures as well as experiencing its worst snowstorm since 1971.

The UK has also been experiencing low temperatures this winter although there's been a lack of snow in most regions.

Climate change is believed to be behind the unseasonable chills around the world, with increased carbon levels making global weather more extreme including hotter summers than ever before.

However, some think there's a different explanation — that the weather could be a sign of the end times.

Israel365 News, which describes itself as offering "a fresh and Biblical perspective on the latest news from Israel and the Middle East," explains that the prophet Isaiah speaks repeatedly of deserts blooming in his description of the end of days.

"The arid desert shall be glad, The wilderness shall rejoice/And shall blossom like a rose," Isaiah 35:1 says.

Meanwhile, Isaiah 43:19 says: "I am about to do something new/Even now it shall come to pass, Suddenly you shall perceive it/I will make a road through the wilderness/And rivers in the desert."

According to the Biblically-minded, the abnormal presence of snow in typically dry, hot areas could be the "rivers in the desert" the prophet says will indicate the end of the world.

In a more optimistic interpretation of the unusual weather, Isaiah also speaks of snow as a good omen that signifies God's forgiveness in 1:18.

"'Come, let us reach an understanding'" says Hashem in the verse.

"'Be your sins like crimson, They can turn snow-white/Be they red as dyed wool, They can become like fleece'."
