Bloke jailed for farting in police officer’s face as he caught him shoplifting

A man has been given almost three years in jail after he farted in a police officer’s face as he was arrested for shoplifting.

Matthew Hapgood, 41, was nicked in Tesco pocketing £33-worth of beer and cider. He was also caught stealing vaping products from an Esso garage.

Oxford Crown Court heard that as he was caught he “broke wind in the officer’s face during the course of that arrest” on March 21.

On Friday he was jailed for 34 months by Judge Ian Pringle QC having pleaded guilty to robbery, shoplifting, possession of a bladed article and criminal damage.

Justice Pringle said: “You have a lengthy history, no less than 31 previous convictions for 83 offences.

“All really to do with a drug or alcohol addiction which has been with you for most of your adult life.”

In Hapgood’s defence Ronan McCann, mitigating, said that his client was the sufferer of “long-term addiction in relation to substances” which were the ultimate cause of his problems.

Of Ruttle Close, Wallingford, Hapgood appeared in court via video link from HMP Bullingdon where he has been detained since March.
