The Government’s transition towards a net-zero economy is paying off big time, with tens of thousands of jobs secured in the past 12 months. Figures published on Friday by the Department for International Trade show at least 56,000 high-quality jobs have been secured across the UK since November 2020. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has also welcomed more than £5.8billion in foreign investment that will help launch his green revolution.

The announcement came ahead of the Cabinet meeting in the South-West today to discuss the Government’s green agenda.

Next week, the UK will also host the Global Investment Summit in London, which will bring together some 200 industry leaders who will look for lucrative investment opportunities.

Scoring private investment and multi-million-pound deals is a core element of the Government’s roadmap towards net-zero.

The Government has set an ambitious target of reaching net-zero by 2050, with an additional goal of slashing greenhouse emissions by 78 percent by 2035.

Towards this goal, the Government has secured more than £650million to advance offshore wind farms, supporting nearly 3,600 jobs across the Humber and North-East.

More than £900million was also put forward towards accelerating the nation’s transition to zero-emission vehicles.

Mr Johnson said: “These new figures are yet more evidence that going green means creating high-quality jobs across the United Kingdom.

“We are at the forefront of seizing these new opportunities, supported by major government investment and a British zeal for innovation and commerce.

“Since the launch of our 10 Point Plan, businesses across the country have attracted international investment in the industries of the future, ensuring we build back better and greener.”

The Prime Minister’s green revolution is being backed by more than £400million from Envision AESC.

The company will invest in battery manufacturing as part of £1billion with Nissan and Sunderland Council to establish an Electric Vehicle Hub in Sunderland.

Italian energy company ENI Spa has also invested more than £400million in offshore wind.

Claudio Descalzi, chief executive of Eni, said the company is strongly committed to the energy transition and is confident net-zero can be achieved by 2050.

The transition, he said, will involve deploying existing technologies in the field of carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and renewables.

He added: “We’re developing breakthrough technological solutions, such as magnetic fusion.

“Our decarbonisation strategy is, therefore, pragmatic and concrete, and we consider UK as a strategic country to invest in.”

The Global Investment Summit (GIS) 2021 will take place on November 19 and will be hosted by the Prime Minister with support from the Royal Family.

The event will be preceded by the United Nation’s 26th Climate Change Conference in Glasgow on November 1 to 12.

The summit will highlight the best of British technology and innovation and showcase the nation’s commitment to tackling the climate crisis.

International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “The UK is already one of the most attractive investment destinations in the world and the Global Investment Summit will build our reputation further as we bring the world’s top business names to our shores.

“Inward investment helps to level up the UK by making companies more profitable, which means they can invest back into local economies and create stronger supply chains, meaning more sustainable communities for the future.

“Investment in new technologies and green innovation will also be vital as we make progress to net zero emissions, and delivering the Prime Minister’s 10 Point Plan.”
