Brit craving fish’n’chips abroad served ‘tragedy’ as order ‘lost in translation’

A UK woman living in the United States was served a ‘beyond tragic’ attempt at fish and chips that featured crisps instead of chips.

Reddit user u/Beblits was left devastated after a rare taste of home she’d looked forward to all week ended up in disaster.

The hungry ex-pat had been given advanced notice that a traditional fish supper was going to be served in her work cafeteria, and anticipation for a familiar, cosy meal began to build.

She said that, after meal after meal of sandwiches and pizza, the email saying that fish and chips was coming to her lunch plate got her “really excited”.

But things soon turned sour and her hopes and dreams dashed when the recipe for the dish got ‘lost in translation’.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star the hungry Brit abroad discussed her traumatic experience.

“The company had an amazing cafeteria with multiple daily dishes, a grill, a sandwich bar, pizza, etcetera.

“They would send out an email every morning with today's specials,” she said.

u/Beblits, who had lived in the States for six years at the time of writing, added that she had been genuinely looking forward to this little taste of home, but her dreams were shattered in a tear-jerking calamity.

She continued: “So I was really excited when I got this email saying they're going to be serving fish and chips.

“I got to the cafeteria and saw the 'chips' they had but I ordered it anyway because I couldn't believe it."

But the disappointed UK national couldn’t even get cross at the meal, which she said had set her back about £6: “It's a shame because those were hand-cut chips so they were really trying”.

As ever with the internet, people were quick to share their thoughts on the unusual rendition of the British classic.

Taking to Reddit, AdmiralSkeret said: “This would make the news if you tried to serve whatever that is in the UK, beyond tragic.”

“Ahh fish and crisps,” said shakeSnake_2390. “Everyone's favourite meal. Better hold on the vinegar though.”

User Swanbiltong added: “That food got lost in translation.”

Making an important point, Practically_Canadian said: “The worrying thing about this is that whoever created this genuinely believes that the British delicacy of fish and chips actually comprises of battered fish and crisps”.

Crucially, Roskal added: “This is why Americans say our food is bad.”

Summing up the poor Brit’s meal, R961ROP said: “If that was my last meal on death row I’d pull the lever myself”.
