Devilish number 666 ‘bus to Hell’ axed because Christians feared riding it

It’s the end of the road for the bus to Hell.

The number 666 bus has been carrying passengers to the popular resort of Hel in northern Poland for many years.

But bus operators PKS Gdynia have bowed to pressure from religious conservatives in the Catholic-majority country, and are changing the number of the Hel bus to 669 instead.

The Polish word for Hell is Pieklo, but religious leaders in the country still weren't happy with the connotations.

One Polish-language Catholic newspaper described the bus route’s number as “Satanic stupidity”.

“Hell is the negation of humanity. It is eternal death and suffering. You can only laugh at this reality if you simply don’t understand what it is,” the editorial in Fronda read.

The bus route was slammed as “scandalous anti-Christian propaganda”, and the newspaper warned that the bus route was was “just the tip of the iceberg of a much greater problem.”

“The management board buckled under the weight of letters and requests that were sent to us, maybe not in large numbers, but cyclically for many years with a request to change the line number,” said Marcin Szwaczyk, spokesperson for PKS Gdynia.

The number 666 is traditionally identified with the Devil, in accordance with the Biblical Book of Revelation in which St John the Divine wrote: “Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666”.

Combine that with the fact that the name of Hel, a lovely beach resort on the Baltic coast, sounds not unlike the English word for Satan’s domain and you have a particularly devilish bus route.

Some translators have claimed that St John actually wrote 616, but Satanists have been happily using the more common translation for years and see no reason to change.

Peter Gilmore, High Priest of the new York Church of Satan said: "By using 666 we're using something that the Christians fear. Mind you, if they do switch to 616 being the number of the beast then we'll start using that."
