The UK has been urged to save the EU from their dependency on Russian oil and gas, which has been blamed for the recent gas crisis that has been gripping the continent. This comes after Moscow sent gas prices soaring by decreasing gas deliveries travelling into the continent through Russia’s vast network of pipelines.

This comes after Moscow sent gas prices soaring by decreasing gas deliveries travelling into the continent through Russia’s vast network of pipelines.

In fact, gas flow has been diverted away from the West and towards the East for nearly 30 days straight.

This has sent prices skyrocketing to record highs, even surpassing the record prices seen back in October.

October’s surging prices were also blamed on a Russian gas squeeze.

Gazprom, Russia’s state-owned gas giant, has been accused of deliberately withholding gas deliveries to the bloc to speed up certification of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline

But its certification has been suspended, much to the disdain of the Kremlin, who claim an operational Nord Stream 2 would ease Europe’s crisis.

Ben Judah, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council think thank, tweeted: “Most audacious thing Macron could do to respond to the current geopolitics?

“Propose a European but not exclusively EU nuclear energy alliance with its objective to dramatically reduce dependence on Russian and all other forms of oil and gas. Push the German mistake.”

He shared an image of “Europe’s nuclear future”, where the UK was tagged as a potential partner.

Germany has been criticised for relying too much on Russian gas, and also for installing the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which experts fear will only increase Russian President Vladimir Putin’s grip on the region.

Earlier this month, a senior official from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany defended the controversial pipeline, saying that it should not be mixed up with political and human rights disputes with Russia over Ukraine.

This suggests that even if Russia were to invade Ukraine, Germany would be unwilling to impose sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

Mr Judah added: “They want it to be not exclusively EU because you want to join up with what Britain is doing and be ready to work with Norway and crucially Ukraine and other Eastern European states trapped in the energy vice.”

“Macron should argue — the climate crisis, the Russia crisis, even aspects of the supply chain crisis due to Chinese production stalling after stopping importing Australian coal — is all tied into an energy crisis.

“It’s as serious but less visible than the 1970s oil shock.

“France he should argue made itself sovereign through nuclear energy — now France offers Europe to do the same.

“Countries cannot only seek protection from France, UK and US from Russia whilst being 100 percent dependent on Russia gas.”
