Firefighters forced to dodge bull semen ‘projectiles’ after cattle breeder blaze

Ten fire crews battled against 'projectiles' of bull semen as fire raged around them for more than two hours, after a blaze at a cattle breeding facility.

Back in September 2019, crews were called to a blaze at Yarram Herd Services in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia in the early hours of the morning.

A spokesman from the Country Fire Authority said at the time that the fire had "completely shredded the building."

But the "huge blow" for farmers came from the fact that 100 cryogenic cylinders of cattle semen were destroyed in the fire.

And the poor firemen had to be wary of "projectiles" of semen coming at them as they fought against the flames.

""The liquid inside the cylinders was rapidly expanding and essentially the lids of the cryogenic cylinders were just popping off the top and projectiles were being thrown from the building," Country Fire Authority Gippsland commander Chris Loeschenkohl told ABC at the time.

Loeschenkohl added that dodging bull semen was a first in his career.

ABC reported that Yarram Herd Services had provided artificial insemination, breeding advice, herd testing, calf dehorning, and freeze-branding services for dairy and beef cattle farmers for 20 years.

Committee vice chairman Aaron Thomas said that the actual cylinders are worth between $500 (£281) and $1,000 (£562), while the semen inside them varies in price.

"We're coming into the AI season so there would have been substantial amounts of semen inside the tanks that we've lost, which was owned by our local farmers, and it can range in value from $5 (£2.81) per straw to $95 per straw (£53)," he said.

He added: "It's going to be a huge blow, especially for our farmers."

Thomas also said the farmers also lost a lot of equipment as a result of the fire.
