Grunting ‘Deliverance’ inbred family member ‘grabbed hold of screaming woman’

The world's most inbred family have revealed a disturbing encounter with an outsider in a chat with a documentary filmmaker who has infiltrated their secretive and strange clan.

The Whittakers may just be one of the most fascinating families in the United States after spending decades living in squalor, cut off from mainstream society.

The world first found out about the family from Odd, West Virginia when film-maker Mark Laita made a documentary about them a few years ago.

And he has returned a few times this year to provide an update on how their doing following his generous fundraising for them.

In his latest YouTube video, Mark learns of a grim incident involving one of the family members "grabbing hold" of a woman.

The siblings and a cousin are so severely deformed, their eyes point in different directions and none more so than Ray who is unable to speak with words.

Instead, Ray reacts to questions and shares his feelings through a series of grunts which vary in tone.

It is perhaps Ray's limited communication skills and interaction with the outside world, that explains why bumping into a woman left her "screaming".

When Mark asked Ray if he'd ever had a girlfriend, he enthusiastically grunted twice to say yes and started nodding, despite a relative insisting he hadn't.

To get to the bottom of the dispute, Mark asked another family member.

"He had hold of on, he had a woman up on the hill here," Kevin replied.

Another family member told Mark: "She screamed when Ray had hold of her."

To clarify exactly what they meant, Mark asked if he aggressively took hold of her and was told "yeah".

"She wasn't co-operating?" Mark probed.

The same family member whose speech is just about intelligible, explained: "Ray had hold of her, that's what we were told. We don't know. I had no idea, that's what we were told. That was a long time ago."

On his first visit to the Whittaker family who he documents as part of his White Underbelly series, Mark compared them to the toothless hillbillies of classic 1972 thriller Deliverance.

Back then, he described them “screaming and running away” with “pants around their ankles” when he arrived at their squalid, ramshackle trailer home in Odd, West Virginia.

"And this would happen over and over,” Mark said. “It was out of control – the craziest thing I have ever seen."

Yet after setting up a fundraising page for the family, Mark's followers have transformed their lives with home improvements.
