The maker of Grand Theft Auto has confirmed the sixth version of the second-best-selling video game of all time.

Rockstar Games announced Wednesday that fans of the action-adventure games should expect to see the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 in ‘early December.’

GTA 6 is speculated to take place in a fictionalized version of Miami and features two protagonists, a man and a woman – marking the series’ first leading female character.

Rockstar Games shared sparse details in a press release, saying the trailer will be released ‘in early December’ to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary.

Many fans see GTA 6 as a long time coming, as its predecessor was released in 2013 and sold over 185 million units worldwide as of August.

Rockstar Games announced Wednesday that fans of the action-adventure games should expect to see the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 in ‘early December’

President of Rockstar Games Sam Houser shared: ‘In 1998, Rockstar Games was founded on the idea that video games could come to be as essential to culture as any other form of entertainment, and we hope that we have created games you love in our efforts to be part of that evolution.’

While not much is known about GTA 6, hackers released gameplay of the new version in 2022 – months after Rockstar Games confirmed it was in development.

The unprecedented leak includes over an hour of footage showing robberies, gunplay and open-world driving, and was posted on the GTAForums message board over the weekend.

It also shows some fully-voiced conversations between characters, including a female protagonist, in a fictionalized modern-day Miami known as Vice City.

In a September 2022 statement published on its social channels, Rockstar said it was ‘extremely disappointed’ to have details on the game shared in this way but claimed that the leak would not delay the project.

But a report from Bloomberg Wednesday confirms much of what was seen in the leak.

Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, told an investor call in May 2023 that their plans for 2025 will set ‘new standards in our industry.’

A hacker has released gameplay of Grand Theft Auto VI, the next installment of the best-selling video game, in one of the biggest leaks in gaming history.

And they boasted that Fiscal 2025 will see the game firm raking in ‘$8 billion in Net Bookings.’

Famously, GTA 5 earned Rockstar over $6 billion in earnings, but GTA 6 is already projected to make $1.7 billion in sales, according to an analyst with Goldman Sacs.

Grand Theft Auto was first released in 1997, set in Liberty City (based in New York), San Andreas (California) and Vice City (Miami).

The first incarnation was 2D, with the camera looking directly down on the cartoonish action. Controversially, players are rewarded for committing random acts of violence – a theme that runs through all GTA games.

GTA 2 hit shelves for PC and PlayStation in 1999, set in an unnamed 2013 metropolis described as ‘Anywhere, USA’. Again, this used an overhead viewpoint.

And two years later, the third version was released – the first 3D game in the series.

GTA 3 is also set in Liberty City and is a watershed in the series, with ‘go anywhere’ sandbox gameplay, mini-map locator and constant voice-acted speech.

GTA: Vice City, set in a city based in Miami in 1986, similar to what gamers could expect with GTA 6, was released in 2002.

In 2004,  GTA: San Andreas was released, set in 1992 in a state based on California and Nevada, featuring cities based on LA, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

And GTA IV was available in 2008, also based in Liberty City.
