Home of man whose body is buried in tomb beneath sells for £50k over guide price

The home of a well-known eccentric has sold for £50,000 more than its guide price despite the house having one very strange addition buried beneath.

Huddersfield's best-known eccentric Jake Manglewurzel's home has sold for £125,000 – £50,000 more than the guide price of £75,000.

The badly-damaged house, however, includes Jake's remains – which are buried in a tomb under the property.

Despite this though, someone was still eager to snap up the house in Salendine Nook, Huddersfield, after it was put up for auction with Action House Manchester earlier this year, reports ExaminerLive.

Auction House Manchester confirmed his home – where he lived for decades – had been sold, but no details of the buyer have been made available.

But it looks as though the whoever the purchaser is will have a big project on their hands.

"The existing house now requires extensive rebuilding works and refurbishing throughout but there is the potential to significantly extend the existing property subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents," said the action house.

Jake, who died from cancer in August last year aged 83, was known as the town's "joker-in-chief" and would pull funny stunts like drive around with a kitchen sink on his car – leaving people in stitches.

He also became well known after being featured in a documentary about Huddersfield several years ago, but spoke out against it because he didn't think the doc did him justice.

His wife Jack Smith, from Leeds, is understood to inherit the proceeds from the sale of the house but declined to speak about it when approached by ExaminerLive.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman, who knew Jake, said: "It's nice that Jake's house has been sold. Jake Manglewurzel was a real character and once gave me a passport to Wurzeland and was mostly an amusing character but not always. I'm delighted that his house is going into good hands."
