Mr Potato Head has gone gender neutral and is no longer a mister.

Hasbro, the company that makes the potato-shaped plastic toy, is giving the spud a modern makeover and renamed it simply as Potato Head.

The change will appear on boxes this year.

It has sparked a woke row backlash with toy fans blasting the “PC gone mad” decision.

Toy makers have been updating their classic brands to appeal to modern children.

Barbie has shed her blonde image and now comes in multiple skin tones and body shapes, while Thomas the Tank Engine added more girl characters.

American Girl, a celebrated line of dolls released in 1986, has released its first male toy.

Hasbro said Mr Potato Head, which has been around for about 70 years, needed a modern makeover.

Mr Potato Head, first sold in 1952, is a potato shaped toy which mimics the human face.

Users can change its features including the ears, eyes and mouth.

By ditching the mister Hasbro kicked up a hornet’s nest among toy lovers.

Talk Radio presenter Mark Dolan hit out at the move saying on his show: “The legendary toy Mr Potato Head, a toy that has brought joy to millions of little boys and little girls, that you put the different features on – give him fuzzy eyebrows and a different smile, well he is the latest victim of cancel culture.

“Of woke political correctness gone mad.

“It is a shocking story, it is a disgrace.

"He’s a potato! Please leave well alone. Welcome to the crazy world of 2021.”

The move caused a furious reaction across social media.

Good Morning Britain co-host Piers Morgan tweeted: “Imagine thinking in the middle of a global pandemic: ‘What’s really important is dropping the ‘Mr’ from Mr Potato Head & making him gender-neutral in case we upset a few wokies.’”

This view was shared by Alex from Widnes who commented: “The insanity continues.”

Michael from Bristol added: “Where is this s**t going to end?”
