Mum and daughter ‘butchered nan with chainsaw and dumped her brains in bin bag’

A mum and daughter stand accused of killing their own mother and grandmother.

Candace Craig, 44, stands accused of killing Margaret Craig, 71, on May 23 and allegedly getting her daughter Salia Hardy to help remove her remains.

Police located her remains on a charcoal grill after they had allegedly been dismembered with a chainsaw, with Prince George's County police alleging that the daughter had been involved in the cleanup effort.

Cops attended the Maryland, US, address to perform a welfare check when they smelt the odour of decomposition.

They said they found “what appeared to be brain matter” in open bags of rubbish, court documents obtained by WJLA said.

Facing charges for the death of Margaret, both Candace and Salia are now in custody at Prince George's County Department of Corrections.

Police are understood to still be working on a motive, a press release says.

The court documents state: “Defendant 2 [Salia Hardy] stated that the Defendant threatened to report her daughter, Defendant 1 [Candace Craig], to the police for fraudulent use of her credit card. Defendant 1 then attacked the Decedent”.

Police responded to a call 200 block of Hill Road about 1:35pm after an unidentified caller said they hadn’t heard from the woman for some time.

Upon arrival, police said they, “recognised the smell of putrefaction and observed blood and tissue on the floor near three white plastic trash bags.”

Police have recovered a chainsaw from the scene, as well as a knife and other cutting utensils.

Prince George's County’s commander of the major crimes division Major David Blazer said: “The detectives of the Homicide Unit will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and that both suspects are held accountable for their cruel and criminal behavior”.
