Mutant cyclops lamb freaks out the internet – and it’s happened to humans

A freaky video shows a newborn lamb with a single giant eye in the middle of its head, and a surgeon has explained what's going on.

In the clip, uploaded on TikTok by Dr Karan Rajan, he shows footage of the writhing animal and explains: "This happens in humans too, it's known as cyclopia.

"It's a crazy rare birth defect where part of the brain doesn't split into two halves, so you don't have two cerebral hemispheres.

"The eyeballs are not put into separate ocular cavities (sockets)."

Explaining why you won't see any one-eyed people walking around, the NHS surgeon adds: "This condition is not compatible with life."

"There are some museums in the word that have preserved cyclopic fetuses from miscarriages," he says before clarifying in the comment section that he does not think this is ethical.

Since it was uploaded on Thursday (October 21) the clip was watched more than 300,000 times and thousands of people shared their thoughts.

One said: "Poor lamb, reminds me of the two-headed calf poem."

A second commented: "Not sure why but this really upset me. Poor goat I hope it's not in pain."

"Could this be the reason we have cyclops in some mythology I wonder?" asked someone else.

This comes after a mutant "elephant pig" born with a trunk and one eye socket baffled a farmer who shared images and a video of the poor creature.

Sadly, the piglet was unable to survive its birth defects.

Livestock technician James Embate, who went to check on the animal, said: "We tried to revive the piglet because it could help us with research but it was unfortunately dead when we arrived.

"We checked the other piglets but they were all fine as well as the mother."
